The Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) was created in August 1995. SAPP has seventeen members from twelve member countries including national utilities, transmission companies and independent generators. SAPP established the Short-Term Energy Market in April 2001. From January 2004, SAPP started the development of a competitive electricity market for the SADC region.

SAPP operates four competitive markets, the Day-ahead Market (DAM), Intraday Market (IDM), Forward Physical Weekly (FPW) and Forward Physical Monthly (FPM).

For information on the Day-ahead market:

For information on the other markets:

The APP Solar Benchmark tracks the price that a representative solar PV plant situated in western Zambia would receive selling all its power on the SAPP DAM market.
The APP Wind Benchmark tracks the price that a representative wind plant situated in eastern Zambia would receive selling all its power on the SAPP DAM market.
