Over the past few months, we’ve been thinking a lot about the Future of Data Work and what that means for members of the Observable community. Input from community creators and members like you is what drives us to continually evolve Observable and we sincerely thank you for all of the incredible feedback over the past year. We conducted a research study and shared our learnings in our first ever State of Dataviz 2021 report and encourage you to take a look.

2021 retrospective

2021In 2021 we expanded our platform functionality with a wide variety of new features including: Observable Plot, templates, cell modes, SQLite support, embedding, snippets, spellcheck, data pane, data wrangler, minimap, notebook insights, Excel & Google Sheets support, cloud connected files, improved autocomplete, cell naming, SQL cells, find & replace, co-authoring and so much more. Many of these new features came directly from input provided by community members like you and we are so appreciative of your partnership. Don't miss the 100 Beautiful and Informative Notebooks of 2021 created by Observable ambassador @tomlarkworthy celebrating 100 notebooks from the Observable community.

In the coming year, we will redouble our efforts to making our platform an even better place for data teams of all sizes to explore, analyze, build reports and create dashboards. From data practitioners in small businesses to Fortune 1000 teams, you should expect more features for everyone to do end-to-end data work in one place, without the need to switch between multiple tools. We will focus heavily on empowering these teams of data practitioners by helping them better collaborate within their broader organizations. Our vision is to offer a creative workspace that allows for better data insights through tooling and visual analysis, applicable to all industries and skill levels.

You will experience new ways for Observable's community of creators to connect and learn from each other, including expanded social features that highlight the latest and greatest thinking from others in our community. If you haven’t already, please be sure to check out our 2021 Observable Community Recognition post - the Observable ambassador crew is truly amazing and continues to be a crucial part of our community culture. The Ambassador program is going to expand next year!

In 2022, Observable is growing our team and we are looking for folks passionate about helping everyone make sense of the world with data, together. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you are interested in the Ambassador program or know someone who would be a great addition to our Observable team.

2022 is going to be even more exciting and we look forward to experiencing it together!
