The notebook currently errors out entirely if there's no access to localStorage. You could use https://observablehq.com/@mbostock/safe-local-storage to offer a fallback.

Better! Btw, if you want to test this yourself you need to disable 3rd party cookies for Observable (in Chrome, not sure about other browsers). Without Mike's fallback any access to localStorage should then trigger an error.

Calculating pairwise Elo per puzzle might work — you could also show it over time.

Ooh, though it'd have to be something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TrueSkill. I like this idea. I shall attempt it.

You could also segment it by weekday too.

One interesting wrinkle in something like Elo/TrueSkill is the very asynchronous nature of each mini. Like, Toph went back and did all of 2021 in a couple weeks while Annie did it over the course of the year. So, it's like future Toph competing against past Annie, which isn't what Elo/TrueSkill is exactly setup to predict; they assume people are getting better and worse over time and that you're predicting/measuring their outcomes head-to-head.

Still worth trying and seeing what comes out of it though.

Hi! Even after following the detailed instructions to grab my NYT-S cookie, I wasn't able to use this notebook. The error is "data = TypeError: Failed to fetch." Any insight on this / does everyone else's cookie continue to work? Thanks!

I’m pretty sure the NYT’s api for this has changed a bit since we wrote this. I haven’t had time to debug it or figure out if all the data is still available.
