Some people find the matrix math hard so I did the calculations inline for a "render to plot" here https://observablehq.com/@tomlarkworthy/perspective-transform . Particularly homogeneous coordinate, I see a few people fiddling with 3x3 matrices because the world is 3D.

Neat. Yeah, it can be tricky, but I think it's worthwhile a hundred times over for how much easier it can make reasoning about graphics and geometry. Even for 2D graphics. At a practical level, glMatrix (https://glmatrix.net/) can make the matrices easier to work with as well. (I've always preferred the stack-gl variants, e.g.: https://github.com/stackgl/gl-mat4 )

It's probably only marginally relevant here (due to the additional dependencies, and especially considering the "because you can" part), but are you already familiar with Three.js' SVGRenderer? (https://github.com/mrdoob/three.js/blob/r177/examples/jsm/renderers/SVGRenderer.js)

Yeah, I haven't actually tried it to see how far they go in making SVG look nice. Three.js has always been the library I want to like, but I guess my interests are lower level, because whenever I've used it, the only thing I find myself doing is looking for every possible way to work around the library rather than with it. I think it'd be different if I were exporting models from Blender to the web. WebGPU is turning out to be pretty nice though. A little verbose, but more similar to regl in feel. 🤷‍♂️
