The handwriting was very difficult to make out, clearly there was a greeting at the top but the rest was nothing more to his untrained eyes than a series of squiggles. He knew he could contact one of his [palaeography colleagues](http://www.digipal.eu/) for their astonishing ability to read the unreadable, but first, on the off-chance, he submitted the two images to [Transkribus](https://transkribus.eu/Transkribus/), an optical character recognition service for handwritten material, and adjusted the settings to optimize it for C19th handwriting, on which it had been previously trained with a large sample set; it quickly processed the images and returned a textual version, not completely accurate but enough to give a starting point from which he could decipher most of the content. After a few minutes work he had the majority of the letter fully typed out, it was a letter from Ash himself to an unnamed women, dated only June 21st but not the year and mentioning a party held at a "Crabb Robinson's" house.`34:[] 30:{"id":"c68e81472269ec2b","slug":"possession-a-digital-romance-part-1","title":"Possession: A Digital Romance (Part 1)","thumbnail":"d52642433ff22daa2cbc5213aeea70cd9d66396142b0b796de9db2b810bdb624","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2021-05-12T20:27:29.909Z","update_time":"$D2021-08-18T21:16:52.615Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2021-08-18T21:18:16.422Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":false,"stars":0,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"c867ecdfd0b7c2f8","login":"atiro","name":"Richard","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/3882637c213fa2f61c8b7ef1e318a1575e62fe1a5160793cc1666b5b1706f9c7","tier":"starter_2024","bio":"See Also"},"version":530,"publish_version":530,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"9895a83bf97757f6","login":"atiro","name":"Richard","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/3882637c213fa2f61c8b7ef1e318a1575e62fe1a5160793cc1666b5b1706f9c7","tier":null,"bio":"See Also"}],"members":[{"type":"individual","id":"9895a83bf97757f6","login":"atiro","name":"Richard","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/3882637c213fa2f61c8b7ef1e318a1575e62fe1a5160793cc1666b5b1706f9c7","tier":null,"role":"editor"}],"comments":[{"id":"27b21496dd17cac1","reply_to_id":null,"content":"Given up on treemapping this for the moment","create_time":"$D2021-08-18T21:02:00.515Z","update_time":null,"resolved":false,"user":{"type":"individual","id":"9895a83bf97757f6","login":"atiro","name":"Richard","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/3882637c213fa2f61c8b7ef1e318a1575e62fe1a5160793cc1666b5b1706f9c7","tier":null}},{"id":"db936af3b28c4883","reply_to_id":null,"content":"This is meant to be a treemap but couldn't get it to work","create_time":"$D2021-08-18T21:17:11.711Z","update_time":null,"resolved":false,"user":{"type":"individual","id":"9895a83bf97757f6","login":"atiro","name":"Richard","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/3882637c213fa2f61c8b7ef1e318a1575e62fe1a5160793cc1666b5b1706f9c7","tier":null}}],"custom_thumbnail":false,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":0,"collection":null,"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"Possession: A Digital Romance (Part 1)","cells":[{"id":0,"value":"md`# Possession: A Digital Romance (Part 1)`\n","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":81,"value":"import {Plot, d3} from \"@observablehq/plot\"","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":27,"value":"$32","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":84,"value":"Plot.plot({\n height: 300,\n padding: 0.03,\n marginLeft: 75,\n grid: true,\n x: { axis: null },\n y: { axis: null },\n color: {\n scheme: \"PiYG\"\n },\n marks: [\n Plot.cell(author, {\n x: \"x\",\n y: \"y\",\n fill: d => (d.y > 4 ? 0.7 : (d.x == 0 && d.y < 3 ? 0.7 : 0.2)),\n fillOpacity: 0.5\n // rx: 20 // uncomment for circles\n }),\n Plot.text(author, {\n x: \"x\",\n y: \"y\",\n fontSize: \"18\",\n rotate: d => (d.y > 4 ? 10 : (d.x == 0 && d.y < 2 ? 330 : Math.random() * 360)),\n text: \"letter\"\n })\n ]\n})","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":10,"value":"md`The information specialist handed Roland his new [eduroam](http://www.ja.net/services/authentication-and-authorisation/janet-roaming.html) password, printed out on some cheap, low-quality paper of no great worth compared to the [beautifully decorated books](http://www.vam.ac.uk/blog/national-art-library/divers-oiled-colours-exploring-the-history-of-marbled-paper-in-the-national-art-library) on the shelves around him.
