Maya will talk about being a a power R user who came to D3.js looking for greater expression and interactivity in data visualization. Maya will also share her excitement for why and how it makes sense for teams familiar with R to integrate D3.js in your data visualization pipeline. Karim is an expert in data analytics and makeer of bespoke data visualizations. Karim will demonstrate the beauty and simplicity of using Observable to find, fork, and re-purposes community work to explore data—a talk that combines beauty and deep insights into information. **Environmental Scientists** Jeff will talk about his work conducting complex statistical analyses and generating data for fishery management actions. Jeff's analyses provide the Gulf and South Atlantic Sustainable Fisheries branches, information on size, bag, vessel, and trip limit analyses, season length projections for multiple sectors, changes to the fishing season, and bycatch estimates. He will introduce how managers use this information for making decisions on the technical, administrative, and programmatic aspects of fishery management functions by presenting oral and written reports. Gabe will introduce [NOAA Digital Coast](https://coast.noaa.gov/digitalcoast/data/) data, which range from elevation and inundation to coastal land cover, from benthic habitats to jobs that depend on the marine economy, and beyond. Data come as raster, vector, point clouds, spreadsheets, and many other formats (including many with live map services). Tom will talk about the types of climate data used in stories and visualizations at NOAA’s Climate.gov as well as how to access any climate data through the Climate.gov website. He will also introduce NOAA Climate Program Office’s Urban Heat Island mapping campaigns which has already mapped the urban heat islands for over 20 cities across the country and will be mapping even more this upcoming summer. This data is freely available and is being used by city officials and community members to improve heat health in vulnerable communities. Ben will discuss various data streams used by the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Management Division and will highlight the balance between communicating these data and maintaining required confidentiality. Ben's day-to-day ranges from examining trends in depredation to ensuring dealers are accurately reporting HMS landings. Ben enjoys finding ways to streamline tedious data processes and reporting in other ways than tables.^{[*](https://observablehq.com/d/5368e1082e973998 "Example dataset.")} `34:[{"id":"ce79579bb84cd91f85bd3233ecc829ee160738b749851052227f0c5e30e15ad4982243ba82c5b14ba704bc15c06b291f92e3ad56e7b4a61843deefb25190b6f2","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/ce79579bb84cd91f85bd3233ecc829ee160738b749851052227f0c5e30e15ad4982243ba82c5b14ba704bc15c06b291f92e3ad56e7b4a61843deefb25190b6f2","name":"TDiLiberto_Headshot (1).jpg","type":"image/jpeg","lastModified":1618511696441.637,"size":755404}] 31:{"id":"fbfbe6ed7c80acae","slug":"data-science-for-environmental-research-and-advocacy","title":"Data Science for Environmental Research (and Advocacy)","thumbnail":"dd88a60d85b04b7cc2adb5a87ff3a7bf83c0f10b4fcb3e651b0e681ae02ee045","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2021-03-17T14:26:51.586Z","update_time":"$D2022-06-23T13:22:50.605Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2021-04-19T17:13:02.801Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":false,"stars":9,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"11bfeb572ddbe905","login":"ambassadors","name":"Observable Ambassadors","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/93bf798c058a2bf8d3bb90c0754f774b6278b8b16748784f520b07a8800ef772","tier":"pro_2024"},"version":859,"publish_version":859,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"a7fa3027921865cf","login":"aaronkyle","name":"Aaron Kyle Dennis","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/eb6d0b32ccc6c8febbf105ce4d2a938819bcbd1c6a2c108d3a9c01745d3590f2","tier":null}],"members":[{"type":"team","id":"11bfeb572ddbe905","login":"ambassadors","name":"Observable Ambassadors","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/93bf798c058a2bf8d3bb90c0754f774b6278b8b16748784f520b07a8800ef772","tier":"pro_2024","role":"editor"}],"comments":[],"custom_thumbnail":false,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":2,"collection":null,"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"Data Science for Environmental Research (and Advocacy)","cells":[{"id":0,"value":"md`# Data Science for Environmental Research (and Advocacy)`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":847,"value":"md`\n_Notes from an Event & Invitation to Collaborate_\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":567,"value":"date = md`\n**Earth Day 2021: Thursday April 22, 9 - 10 a.m. PTD, UTC −07:00**\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":800,"value":"md`\n## Quick Links\n\n* [Event annountcement on meetup.](https://www.meetup.com/observablehq/events/277535192/)\n* Crowdcast link: [https://www.crowdcast.io/e/datascienceforenvironmentalresearchandadvocacy2021](https://www.crowdcast.io/e/datascienceforenvironmentalresearchandadvocacy2021)\n* A record of [resources & contact info shared at the event](https://observablehq.com/d/2bba3f14ab6dbd32) \n* [NOAA Fisheries Marine Recreational Information Program Survey Data](https://observablehq.com/@aaronkyle/noaa-fisheries-mrip-survey)\n* [Awesome notebooks](https://observablehq.com/d/522608e7255a9821) for inspiration (organized by topic).\n* [Notebooks using NOAA data](https://observablehq.com/search?page=1&query=NOAA).\n

\nCollabraLink Technologies, Inc. \n\nClimate scientist and science communicator working as a contractor with CollabraLink at NOAA’s Climate Program Office as the consulting climatologist for NOAA’s [Climate.gov](https://climate.gov/). I am a science writer, communication strategist, and social media manager at Climate.gov and the Climate Program Office, and also a member of NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center’s El Ni o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) team forecasting El Niño and La Niña events. \n\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":758,"value":"md`\n**Jeff Pulver**

\nNOAA Southeast Regional Office\n\nOver a decade working for NOAA and currently stationed at the Southeast Regional Office in St. Petersburg, Florida. I work primarily with R statistical software, as well as SQL, SAS, and Excel. Passionate about presenting clear data visualizations and organized work flows. Prior to falling in love with all things data, I worked as fishery observer onboard commercial fishing vessels in Alaska and the Southeast.\n\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":767,"value":"md`\n**Gabe Sataloff**

\nOn Contract to NOAA Office for Coastal Management\n\nI work with a team comprising both geospatial analysts and full stack developers to create tools for exploring and interrogating data. Our geospatial analysts sometimes are looking for quick visualization prototyping when focusing on a particular area. Our office works a lot with Python for data processing and modeling, and we're thinking about the next steps for data visualization.\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":787,"value":"md`\n**Benjamin Duffin**

\n**NOAA Fisheries | Atlantic HMS Management Division**\n\n\nI work with the NMFS Atlantic HMS Management Division, which manages sharks, tunas, and billfish in the U.S. Atlantic. I've always loved fishing, and have worked with fisheries my entire professional career. The last few years, my work shifted toward more data management and analysis than what people think of when I tell them I'm a marine biologist. Data is important, but not always exciting, and sharing data through engaging visualizations makes it easier to digest. Outside of work, I'm beginning to use open source data to research and underwrite investment opportunities.\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":33,"value":"md`\n---\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":223,"value":"ambassadors = md`\n### Observable Ambassadors\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":670,"value":"md`\n

\nCologne, Germany\n\nI'm working in the Agricultural economics department of the University of Bonn. We build and apply optimization models, generally analyzing the economic and ecologic effects of agricultural policies. I'm trying to write OSS that reduces the environmental footprint of agriculture, while also optimizing farmers income. If you're interested, check out our Fruchtfolge decision support system!\n\nI'm really looking forward to exchange ideas / visualisations, and bring more research stuff to Observable!\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":366,"value":"md`\n
