**Duration:** ${launch_date} - ${finalist_showcase_date}
**Target Audience:** Data Practitioners: Anyone (students, professionals, hobbyists, tinkerers) using data driven documents.
**[Who Can Participate?](https://observablehq.com/@ambassadors/dataviz4climate#cell-359)** Anyone can participate. Shortlisted finalists must be from one of the Asian Development Bank's 68 [member countries](https://www.adb.org/who-we-are/about). Submissions must be Observable notebooks that focus on data describing a country or area of ADB operations to tell stories about climate change through analysis and visualization and presented using both English and JavaScript; additional languages may be utilized and are welcome.
**[What's In It for Me?](https://observablehq.com/@ambassadors/dataviz4climate#cell-365)** The author or team of the selected data story will have the potential to be contracted by ADB to develop and deliver one or two additional workshops on data literacy for a total contractual value up to US $${numberWithCommas( award_offer_max_value )}. Shortlisted participants will have access to networking opportunities and mentoring with ADB Development practitioners and other development data experts. `33:T409,### Background ADB placed combating climate change and its consequences [at the top of its development agenda](https://www.adb.org/climatebank). ADB works with governments and civil society to mobilize financing and implement cutting-edge knowledge to address climate change, and is the first Multilateral Development Bank to: * Set clear climate investment targets for 2030: ADB first committed in 2015 to increase its climate investments up to $6 billion annually by 2020—a target it met in 2019. * Implement a long-term climate change operational framework * Establish a climate risk screening and management framework for its operations * Disclose project-level data for all its climate projects * Be accredited by the Green Climate Fund. The bank supports policies, practices, and technology that lower GHG emissions and is mainstreaming a comprehensive approach to climate and disaster resilience. ADB's work also focuses on promoting environmental sustainability and highlighting the link between water, food, and energy.34:T5ec,## [The Challenge](${challenge_url}) In this challenge, [ADB](https://www.adb.org/) is teaming up with [Observable](https://observablehq.com/about)—an innovative technology startup company dedicated to helping everyone make sense of the world with data, _together_. ADB and Observable share the goal of reaching developers, data visualization practitioners, artists, and others to showcase the potential of data collaborations and visual storytelling for supporting climate research and advocacy. We're challenging participants (individuals and teams) to tell data stories on the theme of climate change using the [Observable](https://observablehq.com/) computational notebook platform for JavaScript. Submissions should seek not only to make a data visualization that itself is visually compelling, but also to tell the story of the data, how the team chose to explore it, and the insights that teams discovered in their process. For inspiration, participants are encouraged to review the great climate data notebooks already shared on Observable. Here are some examples of descriptive notebooks featuring climate-related datasets: ${cardList(climate_stories_longform)}
And here are some 'self-standing' visualizations (ones that tell a story without much textual elaboration): ${cardList(climate_visualizations_standalone)}
ADB encourages submissions to engage with themes raised in ADB [Climate Risk Country Profiles](https://www.adb.org/publications/series/climate-risk-country-profiles).35:T647,## Challenge Process Summary The challenge consists of four parts: 1. [application](https://observablehq.com/@ambassadors/dataviz4climate#cell-869) 2. [evaluation and shortlisting](https://observablehq.com/@ambassadors/dataviz4climate#cell-868) 3. [mentoring](https://observablehq.com/@ambassadors/dataviz4climate#cell-867) 4. [final showcase event](https://observablehq.com/@ambassadors/dataviz4climate#cell-866) During the application phase, the challenge is open for submissions from all individuals or teams. To formally participate, applicants must register two accounts, one on the [ADB Challenge platform](${challenge_url}) and one on [Observable](https://observablehq.com/). By or before the application deadline, participants must publish their data visualization story on Observable and submit their Observable notebook code to ADB through the Challenge platform. After the application deadline passes, evaluation and shortlisting will be performed on the ADB Challenge platform. The Judges—a committee of handpicked experts in climate change research, knowledge management, and data visualization— will shortlist ${finalist_shortlist_count} finalists according to the parameters for judging noted below. During the mentoring phase, shortlisted finalists will then receive expert mentoring that will help them refine and improve their submission. At the end of the mentoring period, finalists publish their updated notebooks. The challenge culminates in a public showcase event where the finalists present their data stories to the panel of Judges and a willing notebook is named.36:T6b4,md` ### Registration Participants must register a user account on the [ADB Challenge platform](${challenge_url}) during the application period: from ${launch_date} at ${launch_time} to ${application_deadline_date} at ${application_deadline_time} and must have truthfully and accurately completed all required information therein.
