This is the obvious insight, but what else this visualization tells us is that most of the BPD dispatches don't result in anyone the Emergency Medical Services, either at the time of BPD dispatch or after they have arrived on the scene. This is a positive insight for what it means about the types of calls the Boston Police are receiving, which further informs the ways they can be allocating their resources. One might consider the Boston Police investing more in community outreach than tactical gear or guns. The valuable insights from this visualization are less obvious to ascertain. We can see that March is the month with the most dispatches across Nov 2010- April 2014, with December and January coming in at a close second. However, what does this mean for BPD, BFD, and EMS? One may assume that a month like December which has multiple religious holidays, including Christmas and Hannukah, as well as New Years Eve, may result in the month with the most dispatches due to upticks in gatherings that involve alcohol. However this isn't the case. So what could March having the most dispatches suggest? Weather could play a factor, as that is a time where Boston tends to have heavy snow fall which could mean more car accidents. But in order to get a better understanding we should break this down by agency. This keeps with the overall trend and one could glean that because of it being the colder months more homes are turning on their heat or using fire places and fire pits compared to the summer where one could assume fewer indoor and outdoor fires are being started. Also, the homeless population suffers under the grueling Boston winters and many may accidentally start fires that get out of hand in a bid to keep warm. Boston FD can use this data to determine how to best leverage their resources for the community: ie if homeless individuals starting fires is a problem then using fire stations as potential shelters or purchasing space blankets and winter coats for the community could help mitigate this issue. This viz is just the first peak into insights for how their resource of time is being spent.
