**Notes:** At the bottom of the New Yorker's site, you can click "cookie settings," which takes you to the above pop-up. ^ There you're met with the headings: "Privacy Preference Center" and "Manage Consent Preferences," but as you'll note the blue text to the right of every option displays "Always Active." There are no buttons to press, no options to select except the gray button at the bottom, which reads "Continue to Site." I'm struck by the way the word *continue* implies agency / forward action, yet everything about the cookie-managing experience is heavily controlled and users lack agency in every respect. The only choice that's *really* presented, is the choice to visit the site, but not how one's act of visiting the site is constantly monitored and surveilled. All of this has prompted some curiosity on my part about digital confirmation bias and echo chambers with news sources in particular. Definitely something that merits more reflection.
