The true color image animating above transitions between two 5 by 5-km scenes in the Adirondacks in Upstate New York: one on 18 September 2019 when the foliage was still green and the other on 13 October 2019 when the autumn foliage was near its peak color. The histograms animating along with the satellite imagery represent the pixel counts of each RGB channel within the white box. Notably, values of the red channel increase substantially as the leaves turn. While the temporal resolution of Sentinel-2 is good, the ability to monitor the leaf color depends on a cloud-free scene. In the Northeast US in the fall, odds are pretty good some clouds will be around, which results in the scene frequently being obscured.
