I believe that under the pointerleft() function this part of the code path.style("mix-blend-mode", "multiply").style("stroke", null); should reference the mixBlendMode input variable rather than being "multiply" directly

What would be the easiest way to alter 
color: "steelblue", (or the LineChart code)
 to use a new color for every line?

How do I use scaleBand for the x axis? I tried xType: d3.scaleBand and the axis is drawn but without any lines on the chart. I also tried manually setting xDomain with an array but no luck

A band scale is for things like bar charts where each value has a “bandwidth”. It is typically not appropriate for a line chart where the x-axis represents a continuous (temporal) dimension. If you want to draw a line chart with an ordinal x-axis (which is also generally not recommended because it is often not meaningful to interpolate between ordinal values), you could switch to a scalePoint, but you’ll need to edit the chart implementation because both point and band scales’ domains are defined as an array of discrete values [x1, x2, x3, …] rather than a continuous extent [xmin, xmax].
