Sonification provides a basis for understanding emergent phenomena and its relation to production. We aim to explore concepts of dissonance, silence, happenstance, non linearity, harmonic structures and their interactions with observed patterns of life in a system engineered as a closed loop. This project will refurbish a dilapidated aquaponic system in a community space that is currently caught in a state of bureaucratic gridlock and will consist of 5 integrated components: The process of data sonification will be available though a streaming audio channel which can be played over installed speakers. An accompanying dynamic data visualisation can be displayed as a projection. Both sound and light human-machine intersections are dedicated to understanding nature as an irreducible complex system and encouiraging a feeling of embeddedness within the human-informatic-nature communication loops. It consists of 5 integrated components: - An Atmospheric Water Generator - A Water Management System - An Aquaponic Pond - A Micro farm - a Cybernetic information System The initial sensor list will generate the data corpus for parameterization. “Voices” will be denied for sensors/parameters. The initial list includes: - water collection by mass over time - water quality based on ph - water temperature at point of collection - pond water temperature - pond water nitrate/nitrite levels - pond water ammonia levels - pond fish (tilapia / shrimp) activity - pond bloom (based on optical sensors of pond dinoflagellates) - shrimp cannibilization and loss rate (image analysis of count? distopian sound) Data sonification will be available through a streaming audio channel allowing for broadcast in any space. An accompanying dynamic data visualisation can be displayed as a projection. Raw data provides a way to analyse the economic and generative aspects of the micro-environment. Concretely these data will be used to model the C02 cost of protein production and how the act of eating emerges from the opera of ecology. Practical aspects of this proposal may depend on local regulations in the foreseen space, largely due to outdated concepts that define interaction between land use, agriculture, informatics and art. The current challenge is to create a new imaginary that frees local stakeholders to envision how revitalizing the space can benefit the community and conceive of economic possibility for which only the imagination can break the anti patterns of historical orthodoxies For this reason, this project intentionally blurs the line between the outdated taxonomies of production and emergent ways of managing integrative projects. `32:T142a,md` ## Bio - __ Ivan Labra__ Ivan originally studied art criticism, aesthetic philosophy, and semiotics at [Pomona College](https://www.pomona.edu/). Ivan began his career in technology working for IBM in Seattle, Washington in the mid 1990s in on a project that became the [world’s largest Java development effort](https://www.drdobbs.com/ibms-san-francisco-project/184415597). During this time period, Ivan worked on teams developing commercial solutions for distributed systems and commercializing Object Orientation. Ivan used his free time to help start an online [digital arts collective](http://www.bornmagazine.org/about.html) focused on experimentation in emerging Web technologies and the modalities they afforded. Ivan moved back to California in the late 90’s where he worked at a start-up in Silicon Valley as a product architect in research and development, at one of the first application service providers or ASPs (now known as SaaS). In 2003 Ivan moved to Europe and worked for the US Department of Defense leading a Research and Development Program on Transformational Command and Control, developing decentralized generative technologies for complex distributed disaster response scenarios. In 2006 Ivan accepted a position to join the Research Faculty at the [Cebrowski Institute](https://nps.edu/web/cebrowski) Naval PostGraduate School under [Peter Denning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_J._Denning) focused on the study of generative networks. In 2017 Ivan returned to his product design and development roots joining datagraph and helping it develop datageno.us, a combination of advanced data technologies and expert services designed to enable generative symbolic systems. During this time Ivan also served as an advisor to early stage startup [Reduct](https://app.reduct.video/lapd/walk-the-talk/) specialising in the collaborative use of AI and video. In 2020 Ivan launched labra.studio as a cybernetic studio and discovery space for the cultivation of imaginative and generative work based in symbolic systems and their many manifestations. Working with datgeno.us at his studio, Ivan currently enjoys pursuing his lifelong interests in blurring the line between the useful, coherent, elegant, and evocative. - __James Anderson__ James studied architecture, graduated with degrees in architectural design and architectural history, and taught, as a professor at the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](https://web.mit.edu/). He taught computer assisted design there in addition to researching the work of [Hans Scharoun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Scharoun) and his approach to reconciling organic and modernist methods. Prior to founding Datagraph, James was a contributing developer of a financial markets prediction application for a group of private investors in the United States and Germany. The system, which derives market predictions from sentiment-based analysis, was employed by [Dow Jones](https://www.dowjones.com/). Most recently James’ work has focused on distributed streaming semantic data publishing papers with Fraunhofer: RDF Rule Streams - A Position Paper, and on RDF Graph Stores as Convergent Datatypes, as well as developing new symbolic representation technologies based on [Category Theory](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_theory).
