After looking for time-tracking apps, I ended up decided on good 'ol google sheets due to the flexibility and ability to make it an API endpoint should I ever want to make a language learning dashboard. On this page I go over the specifics of my language learning activities. I only tracked *active*¹ time in German and Japanese. I didn't include anytime spent in French, and consequently my French time became limited to conversation with my francophone buddies because it didn't 'count' toward anything. I realised later on this was a mistake, but I had already started and had data collection fatigue, so I didn't change it. *Active* means the activity fully has my attention, no easy task given that I have ADHD. I don't count when I listen to podcasts while cooking, cleaning, making coffee etc. I unfortunately hopped from one activity to another and wasted a lot of time looking for material. I attempted to 'plan' my material - some platforms make that relatively easy, such as curating playlists on youtube. If I don't know exactly what I want to watch, I go to my youtube playlist and pick something from my German documentary list, for example. I ended up accumulating a lot of books and starting and stopping most of them. This is just a problem I have in general - there's too much content out there and since I won't have time to read it all, I want to read what is best for me in the moment....and boils down to a lot of FOMO. 32:T1ac8,Reading and listening. **Listening**: Watching movies, shows, youtube videos, listening to podcasts.

Also called 'freeflow', the purpose is to read or watch something that is more or less at your level so that you can understand what is going on without looking up unknown words. Useful for: - Grasping the meaning of unknown words naturally through context. - Drilling in everything you learned from intensive activities and getting a dense amount of information and repetition of vocabulary in a short amount of time.
**Intensive:** Stopping when you don't understand something and looking up words that you can add to your flashcard deck. Useful for: - Working on harder passages - Learning new grammar points and vocabulary ___________ ## Output Speaking and writing. **Speaking**: Conversations, Monologues, Chorusing, Shadowing

This data collection is no different. The biggest discrepancy comes from what I call *language exposure density*: the amount of your TL (target language) that you are exposed to varies depending on the media you're using. For example, podcasts are _language-dense_, since there are few pauses in dialogues. Movies, however, can have minimal dialogue. 'Listening' to a two-hour movie is therefore much different than listening to two-hours worth of podcasts. I listen to a lot more podcasts than movies or shows, but I don't obsess over the time tracking and only count the amount of time a movie has dialogue. If I notice it had quite a lot of pauses, I might reduce the total listening time. When I am 'counting' a movie or show as immersion time, I make sure to watch something that is dense in speech. Another incongruity is from dual audio-reading. Earlier on the in the data collection phase, I was watching movies with subtitles in Japanese and counting that toward 'listening.' In retrospect, this should've been qualified as 'reading,' because my attention is mostly focused on the text rather than the oral qualities of my TL.
