25:["$","title",null,{"children":"📢 Release Notes | EarthScope Consortium | Observable"}] 4b:T4b5,post_04_12_2023 = md`--- April 12, 2023 ### Authentication, Data Access EarthScope data policy has been updated as follows:

**[Data Policy](https://www.unavco.org/community/policies_forms/data-policy/data-policy.html)**. By accessing data from the NSF GAGE Facility archive, operated by EarthScope Consortium (formerly UNAVCO), users agree to appropriate [attribution](https://www.unavco.org/community/policies_forms/attribution/attribution.html) to providers and their sponsors, acknowledgment of EarthScope Consortium and its sponsors, and to adherence to professional and ethical standards.

Now onto the fun stuff. You can now download your favorite RINEX files and other data right in the browser. You simply need to authenticate yourself (it's the law these days!) so we know who is grabbing our data and then make selections and package up your files in one or more zip file bundles that download using the browser, rather than scripts run on your local machine. That's easier *and* safer and we hope you will find this a convenient way to get EarthScope data to conduct your research. `4c:T42f,post_01_18_2023 = md`--- January 18, 2023 ### New Year New We On the first day of the year, EarthScope Consortium became a legal entity combining IRIS (operating the NSF SAGE Facility) and UNAVCO (operating the NSF GAGE Facility). > Powering Geophysics, Empowering a Resilient Society Let's start off with a few collaborative notebooks between GAGE and SAGE staff that we hope you will enjoy: - [EMC Repository Explorer](https://observablehq.com/@earthscope/earth-model-collection-explorer?collection=@earthscope/models) - [Depth Slicer for viewing netCDF files in the browser](https://observablehq.com/@earthscope/emc-notebook-depth-slicer?collection=@earthscope/models) - [netCDF reader](https://observablehq.com/@earthscope/emc-notebook-netcdf-utilities?collection=@earthscope/models) One cool trick here is the ability to load [netCDF](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetCDF) models in the browser by dragging and dropping a file or simply specifying a known EMC model ID and letting the notebook fetch and render it for you. Woohoo! `4d:T548,post_9_07_2022 = md` --- September 7, 2022 ### Hello, Web Assembly The first of many Web Assembly focused notebooks to come from the NSF GAGE Facility (formerly UNAVCO) is this little proof of concept notebook created by Brooks Mershon and Henry Berglund. A user can upload a RINEX (Receiver INdependent EXchange) file, which is a raw bit of ASCII data encoding observations from a GNSS receiver out in the field somewhere. This uploaded RINEX file is parsed and a JSON object is produced which allows us to immediately inspect and visualize statistics contained in an observation file. Big deal! Here's the cool part. The code that handles parsing RINEX and creating a JSON file was written by Berglund in [Go](https://go.dev/) and was being used as a command line tool until we decided to compile that code as a Web Assembly module to allow all of that beautiful functionality to run in the browser! It took a little bit of digging in the community to undrstand how to succesfully set up a Web Assembly Go module in the Observable environment, but now we feel we are off to the races. Arbitrary libraries written in C++ and Go for starters are now on the menu for incorporating high performance libraries into the browser environment via Web Assembly. It is common when perusing a certain slack channel at the NSF GAGE Facility (formerly UNAVCO) to see a discussion blowing up around a recent earthquake, with a frenzied and excited proliferation of data pouring in from many staff members that usually results in at least a few people offering up a specific list of stations that can be used to analyze an earthquake. For example, to quote a recent event response thread: ~~~ Dist (km), Sta, Longitude, Latitude, Closest Date, RT Stat, Network Affiliations 107, LEME, -86.9095, 12.4274, 2021-09-11, No, Telica Volcano;PBO Analysis Complete 108, SCW2, -87.0209, 12.6966, 2021-09-06, No, Telica Volcano;PBO Analysis Complete 133, ELMA, -86.6748, 12.4658, 2021-08-31, No, Telica Volcano;PBO Analysis Complete 145, MOM0, -86.5409, 12.4061, 2021-08-31, No, Telica Volcano;PBO Analysis Complete 175, MANA, -86.2490, 12.1489, 2021-08-29, No, IGS;COCONet;Met Sites;PBO Analysis Complete;COCONetRefurb;NOTA Core;Telica Volcano 218, SSIA, -89.1166, 13.6971, 2021-09-20, Yes, Met Sites;COCONet;IGS;PBO Analysis Complete;COCONetRefurb;NOTA Core;NOTA Core multi-GNSS;NOTA Core GPS+GLO ~~~ So we [wrote a little notebook]([New notebook to try!](https://observablehq.com/@unavco/event-search?collection=@unavco/unavco-for-observable) that is aimed to be an entry point to any discussion that surrounds a recent earthquake. Something happened, and we want to find data to match where and when something happened! Let's dive in:`4f:T992,alpha1_0 = md` --- September 15, 2021 ### Data Archive Interface... in a notebook!
We decided to rewrite the [Data Archive Interface](https://www.unavco.org/data/dai/) on this new fangled platform in an effort to prepare ourselves to make data discovery tools in a way that allows rapid prototyping and iteration as the fundamentals of how the NSF GAGE Facility (formerly UNAVCO) manages its data evolves over the coming years. Observable provides a platform for our engineers to quickly test out ideas as they relate to creating front-end user-facing web interfaces. We like to focus on supporting our scientific community here at the NSF GAGE Facility and when we see a better tool come along, we are more than willing to try it out if it helps us do a better job of supporting research in geodesy and related fields. Here's a recap of this particular tool: - The [DAI version 1](https://www.unavco.org/data/gps-gnss/data-access-methods/dai1/perm_sta.php) is still available! - The DAI version 2 was written in Flash... ☠️. - The [DAI version 3](https://observablehq.com/@unavco/data-archive-interface) is evolving on Observable Notebooks 📓 and we need your help to use it, break it, and give us feedback so we can make it better. Current functionality of our DAI notebook: - WHAT: Restrict your search for GNSS/GPS data based on metadata properties, such as Receiver, Antenna, and Radome type and the type of data products you are looking for, such as RINEX 2, RINEX 3, and daily position files from research insitutions that ingest raw data and analyze it for you! - WHEN: Search for stations with data in a given date range and sample interval. - WHERE: Draw polygons on a map to pick geodetic locations that you wish to include in your data download. This is handy when you are looking to quickly find data in response to an earthquake event that occured in a known location whether it be yesterday or a decade in the past. - Review files that will be downloaded over FTP. Yes, for now we are stuck with FTP downloads. This will change soon enough, but this tool makes the download process as easy as possible. Choose your data, download a *small* zip file cotaining scripts and a manifest, start your downloads, and go have a cup of coffee or two. - Sharable links. Save your work and share your search with friends, colleagues, and yourself for later review. We can't wait to hear from you. 💬 `50:T461,nextmigration = md` --- August 12, 2021 ### NSF GAGE Facility (formerly UNAVCO) Web Services for notebooks
We are trying to make our data easy to access. Since we love Observable as a platform and know we can build larger applications with Observable notebooks (e.g. rewriting our data archive interface tool) we figure we can start by creating some of the fundamental building blocks on which our tools will be built so that larger applications can be built by us *and by you*! Big questions are often answered by asking many smaller questions, and in that spirit we are aiming to make big tools out of little tools on the web. Here's a collection of little tools we have made for notebooks to start. This [notebook](https://observablehq.com/@unavco/unavco-web-services) lays out code, documentation, and runnable examples of the following functionality (which will be expanding shortly): ~~~js import { eventResponse, position, velocity, fetchProducts, stationCoverage, metadataSearch, polygonSearch, metadataOptions } from "@bmershon/unavco-web-services" ~~~

We had a lot of positive feedback on the [site maintenance notebook](https://observablehq.com/@unavco/unavco-station-maintenance?collection=@unavco/unavco-for-observable) so we decided to keep tinkering and add some small improvements:\n\n- RegEx search on site names.\n- Search maintnance visits table based on start and end dates.\n- Fixed a bug causing trend lines in the scrollable table to render incorrectly.\n\nAnd while we were writing a little code to make our notebooks better, Observable [wrote an article](https://observablehq.com/customer-stories/unavco) about how the NSF GAGE Facility (formerly UNAVCO) is using this platform to support our scientific community in the world of geoscience.\n\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":245,"value":"
