2e:null 2f:["$","title",null,{"children":"Heightmap rendering using a floorcasting algorithm | Philippe Deschaseaux | Observable"}] 34:T562,md`**Floorcasting** (or [heightmap](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heightmap) raycasting) is a [2.5D](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2.5D) heightmap rendering algorithm, and a particular case of [raycasting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_casting). It consists in generating the viewbox pixels by intersecting the corresponding rays coming from the observer with the heightmap. It can be done in different ways: * either by just sampling the heightmap (voxels), or by precisely interpolating the elevation between the grid vertices (an example of which can be found [here](https://js1k.com/2016-elemental/demo/2604)). * either by sampling the heightmap along the rays coming from the observer (thus generating pixels in columns), or by sampling transversaly across the prism of vision and enforce culling by keeping track of current highest point for each pixel column. It's been used in the [Voxel Space](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voxel_Space) engine which powered the **Comanche: Maximum Overkill** game in 1992.
