Este trabajo fue inspirado en una sugerencia realizada por Francisco Menses para "ver" los perfiles de notas de enseñanza media para diferentes establecimientos escolares.

Las notas de enseñanza media (NEM) tienen un impacto en el puntaje de postulación a educación superior en Chile. En el proceso de selección 2020, para enseñanza Humanístico-Científica, un NEM de 6,0 equivale a 623 puntos, y un NEM de 6.5 equivale a 729 puntos (más de 100 puntos de diferencia). Es natural que surja el interés por saber si los datos muestran que "hay establecimientos en los cuales los estudiantes tienen mejores notas que en otros establecimientos".

En este documento se presenta una descripción de los perfiles de notas en distintos establecimientos, pero hay que tener cautela en la interpretación de estos datos: aquí sólo se describe la distribución de las notas y no se hace un juicio sobre la "correctitud" o la "justicia" en la asignación de las notas.

La diferencia en las notas puede tener distintas causas, entre las cuales puede haber efectivamente un distinto nivel en el apredizaje curricular de los estudiantes o una disparidad en los criterios de evaluación. El análisis de las causas queda abierto para el debate entre los lectores y/o futuros estudios con mayor profundidad en la materia.

El sector naranja ilustra el rango de NEM entre el cuartil 1 y el cuartil 3. Este rango corresponde al 50% de los estudiantes que se encuentran entre el 25% inferior y el 25% superior. Si en un curso hubiese 40 estudiantes, corresponde a los 20 estudiantes que se encuentran \"al medio\" (entre los 10 inferiores y los 10 superiores). Este rango es una medida útil para ilustrar la dispersión de los valores, evitando el efecto de casos extremos (outliers)
