Strogatz concludes the note with ideas for extending the metaphor; you learn by playing with the model, not just within it. It’s worth [reading in full](http://ai.stanford.edu/~rajatr/articles/SS_love_dEq.pdf); here’s the last paragraph: > “Additional complications may be introduced in the name of realism or mathematical interest. Nonlinear terms could be included to prevent the possibilities of unbounded passion or disdain. Poets have long suggested that the equations should be nonautonomous (‘In the spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love’—Tennyson). Finally, the term ‘many-body problem’ takes on new meaning in this context.” Attempting to turn solutions into narrative prose forces you to reckon with these features and limits. The abstractness makes for an interesting exercise in empathy! Writing without pronouns is a hell of a test of one’s implicit biases. And writing characters with no identity except their conditions and how they react to them tests the principle that everyone else is just _you_, at a different time. Some properties of this second-order linear system: - Because it’s autonomous (i.e. it doesn’t depend on time), it’s memoryless: an amnesiac waking up in love is indistinguishable from an 80-year-old man finally attaining it; the fifth pass over a point on the plane will always go the same way as the first four. None of the text can reference any past event! No past regrets can ruin future chances, and no past joys can amount to anything more than pleasure in the moment! (In some sense I guess it is ergodic, where life is not?) - Because it’s linear (the change in feeling at every moment is just the sum of scaled feelings), the only stable point is the exact center; things are slow near there, and get faster as you go farther out. The inertness of indifference is sort of intuitive, but it seems odd that here they can go forward faster and faster without bound! Here all relationships either converge to apathy, orbit perfectly equidistant from apathy, or diverge to infinitely intensifying emotions. I couldn’t easily write for the last case, so many stories just stop. - Because it’s a closed system with only two terms (nothing depends on anything other than ${R_name} or ${J_name}), nobody can come between them — and nothing is anyone’s fault but theirs. So it makes an excellent classroom exercise, a fine Internet toy, and a poor model for life. Not that you’d even be tempted! Or that that could ever be mistaken for being the point! Suppose ${Romeo}, who doesn’t actually know that ${Juliet}’s feeling can be quantified as “${memory.state.J.toFixed(5)}” (whatever that means), instead has to build a model in ${Rp[2]} mind of how he _believes_ ${Juliet} to behave, from only observing ${Jp[2]} actions, and imagines that ${Jp[0]} has a similar model for ${Rp[1]}, and decides that ${Jp[0]} has a ${J_heart[1] > 0 ? 'positive' : 'negative'} coefficient in front of the term for ${Rp[2]} affection for ${Jp[1]}, and ${Romeo}’s been reading about pickup artistry on Reddit, and decides that ${Rp[0]} can just ${J_heart[1] > 0 ? 'flatter' : 'neg'} ${Juliet} until ${Jp[0]} likes ${Rp[1]}. Assuming some knowable stationary model, a bird’s eye view of the system, a set of levers — it sounds so creepy! So really a realistic model has to imagine that people are inferring the nature of others’ models of others, and may be repulsed by the model itself. My feelings for you depend on how I think you think my feelings behave. At some point you may start to wonder whether it may be a mistake to even think it coherent to attempt a compact pre-statement of the problem, [à la Kauffman](https://www.edge.org/response-detail/23801) — or whether, even if the process is deterministic, it may be so irreducibly complex that it cannot be decided any faster than it is lived, [à la Wolfram](http://www.wolframscience.com/nks/chap-12--the-principle-of-computational-equivalence/). Or!
