2c:null 2d:["$","title",null,{"children":"Statistical Notes | Zhihao Yao | Observable"}] 32:T7a8,md` In probability theory, the central limit theorem (CLT) establishes that, in many situations, when independent random variables are added, their properly normalized sum tends toward a normal distribution (informally a bell curve) even if the original variables themselves are not normally distributed. The theorem is a key concept in probability theory because it implies that probabilistic and statistical methods that work for normal distributions can be applicable to many problems involving other types of distributions. If ${tex.block`X_{1},X_{2},...,X_{n}`} are random samples each of size ${tex `n`}taken from a population with overall mean ${tex `\mu `} and finite variance ${tex `\sigma ^{2}`} and if ${tex` {\bar {X}}`} is the sample mean, the limiting form of the distribution of ${tex.block` Z=\left({\frac {{\bar {X}}_{n}-\mu }{\sigma /\surd n}}\right)`} as ${tex` n\to \infty `}, is the standard normal distribution For example, suppose that a sample is obtained containing many observations, each observation being randomly generated in a way that does not depend on the values of the other observations, and that the arithmetic mean of the observed values is computed. If this procedure is performed many times, the central limit theorem says that the probability distribution of the average will closely approximate a normal distribution. A simple example of this is that if one flips a coin many times, the probability of getting a given number of heads will approach a normal distribution, with the mean equal to half the total number of flips. At the limit of an infinite number of flips, it will equal a normal distribution. The central limit theorem has several variants. In its common form, the random variables must be identically distributed. In variants, convergence of the mean to the normal distribution also occurs for non-identical distributions or for non-independent observations, if they comply with certain conditions. `33:[] 30:{"id":"d6e848cdaf0f054c","slug":"statistical-notes","title":"Statistical Notes","thumbnail":"dd36912b9fa69829f8abeb7c0002385a9e30f67d3978308990ee5c578ebf6e90","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2020-10-30T18:08:14.676Z","update_time":"$D2022-03-23T18:03:20.597Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2021-01-06T03:40:11.419Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":false,"stars":1,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"610db6fe9b10a76c","login":"howardyao","name":"Zhihao Yao","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/0bac389abf8df9b4d7c6e09e8f96b464d2c01a64946e8b88cd7e143da5750c0e","tier":"starter_2024","bio":""},"version":812,"publish_version":812,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"01b5d984f2428b1a","login":"howardyao","name":"Zhihao Yao","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/0bac389abf8df9b4d7c6e09e8f96b464d2c01a64946e8b88cd7e143da5750c0e","tier":null,"bio":""}],"members":[{"type":"individual","id":"01b5d984f2428b1a","login":"howardyao","name":"Zhihao Yao","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/0bac389abf8df9b4d7c6e09e8f96b464d2c01a64946e8b88cd7e143da5750c0e","tier":null,"role":"editor"}],"comments":[],"custom_thumbnail":false,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":1,"collection":null,"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"Statistical Notes","cells":[{"id":794,"value":"md`# Statistical Notes`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":7,"value":"md`## Probability Distribution`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":744,"value":"md`A probability distribution is a function that describes the likelihood of obtaining the possible values that a random variable can assume.
