Well, it appears that reports of Tears of Joy’s death are greatly exaggerated 😂. According to data collected by the Unicode Consortium, the not-for-profit organization responsible for digitizing the world’s languages, Tears of Joy accounts for over 5% of all emoji use (the only other character that comes close is ❤️ and there is a steeeeeep cliff after that). The top ten emoji used worldwide are 😂 ❤️ 🤣 👍 😭 🙏 😘 🥰 😍 😊. This collection of mostly positive vibes may seem familiar — it is not terribly different from [the last time this data was published in 2019](http://blog.unicode.org/2019/10/the-most-frequent-emoji.html). As infinitely creative and diverse as the world is, the top 100 emoji comprise ~82% of total emoji shares. And yet …. There are 3,663 emoji. So, why does the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee keep [reviewing proposals](https://jenniferdaniel.substack.com/p/hello-old-friend-) and adding new ones? 😵‍💫 This existential question haunts the subcommittee 👻. So, they set out to understand popularity on a more granular level: What are the most frequently used emoji? What do they have in common? Do we have too much of one type but not enough of another? How do we interpret the 83-spot leap (from 97 to 14!) in the use of Pleading Face 🥺? Check out the changes using the interactive tools of the #UnicodeEmojiMirror Project and share your observations! 46:T1df3,distortChart = { let rowSize = 30; let margin = { left: 10, right: 30, bottom: 10, top: 30 }; As an example, let's look at clothing emoji. The top used is crown 👑 while the emoji collecting cobwebs in your keyboard seem to lack non-literal uses (like clutch bag 👝, lab coat 🥼, and flat shoe 🥿). This is a pattern we see over and over again: Here's a small sampling of emoji that are top in their class:

🚀 Rocket Ship found in the Transport-air is symbolic of progress being made and anticipation of big changes.
💪 Flexed Biceps is the top Body-parts emoji (this subcategory excludes hands) and is commonly used to indicate strength, success, overcoming a struggle, exercise, showing off, boasting, or rolling up your sleeve to receive a vaccine.
💐 Bouquet of Plant-Flower for all occasions: congratulations, celebrations, and relationships of many varieties be they platonic or romantic.
🦋 Butterfly is the most common Animal emoji (found in the Animal-Bug subcategory) representative of change, beauty, nature, and transformation.
🤸 Person Doing Cartwheel may not be the most popular sport in the world but it is the most popular Person-Sport suggestive of happiness and joy. Editor's Note: I'm fond of pairing it with a blackhole when disaster is looming 🤸🕳️

(Auf Wiedersehen tiny dancer 💃, talk to the hand, ✋. It was such an unlucky year, even 🍀 dropped out of favor.) Most emoji remain fairly close to their 2019 ranks in 2021 with few notable exceptions. 2019: 😂 ❤️ 😍 🤣 😊 🙏 💕 😭 😘 👍 2021: 😂 ❤️ 🤣 👍 😭 🙏 😘 🥰 😍 😊 See the difference? Look closely. You may miss it. Yeah, 💕 is no longer in the top ten but its replacement 🥰 was just outside at number 16. If you seek dramatic changes, the Top 200 contains bigger jumps — the biggest gainers were 🎂 (113 to 25) 🎈 (139 to 48) and 🥺 (97 to 14). Pleading Face emoji — like many other emoji added in 2018 — saw a great change in rank by 2021. Possibly because of a combination of factors: it had less time to establish its position and also who could resist those puppy dog eyes? And of course COVID continues to be part of our everyday lives as we enter 2022. Despite health-related emoji being used more often, only 🥵 and 🥴 managed to enter the Top 100 in 2021. 😷 moved up from 186 to 156 while 🦠 only just made it into the Top 500. This reflects the sheer number of emoji we use and the variety of situations we use them in, as well as the many different functions they have in our online lives: a global pandemic that changed the way we live had little effect on how we express ourselves online 😂 ❤️ 🎉 🥳 🍕 🌮. 4a:T576,The Unicode Emoji Subcommittee updates the Unicode Standard using [a variety of criteria](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFwNmyXKSzQ), one of which is patterns of emoji usage such as frequency. We have made the data used in this article publicly available [to download](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Zs13WJYdZL1pNZP0dCIXkWau_tZOjK3mmJz0KNq4I30/edit#gid=196891844). It includes emoji ranked by frequency in 2019 and 2021. Please note: The initial ranking of new emoji is not indicative of their true rank because they have had less time to sort out their position. As such, we've only included data for emoji that have been in public use for at least a year to establish themselves to ensure the change in rank reflects true usage. Emoji rank is based on median frequency of use across multiple sources. Please note that gender and skin tone variants are combined into one representative item, to give a clearer picture of how frequently the overall concept of each emoji is used. For example, the frequencies of 👩‍🚀👩🏻‍🚀👩🏼‍🚀👩🏽‍🚀👩🏾‍🚀👩🏿‍🚀 and 👨‍🚀👨🏻‍🚀👨🏼‍🚀👨🏽‍🚀👨🏾‍🚀👨🏿‍🚀 are combined and represented using 👩‍🚀. Note that newer emoji tend to have lower usage, as it often takes time for them to become widely available on all devices. Happy emojiy-ing!4b:[{"id":"1f9d7134e8ad847248718a695d50bdfa27da4370c449e177e3e6515abc04e6c5c33757ddca9ca029877a92a40dbfa886965e7d29d350358e519819c885ca7ae7","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/1f9d7134e8ad847248718a695d50bdfa27da4370c449e177e3e6515abc04e6c5c33757ddca9ca029877a92a40dbfa886965e7d29d350358e519819c885ca7ae7","name":"Emoji Frequency for Alex - 2019_reranked.csv","type":"text/csv","lastModified":1638235025372.84,"size":102934},{"id":"c5a99a279179c16cd97c005bcb8e0b0eba94743abbca266f90d152907842fe408183af25697253e62cce579a4ba35671275724c4ddc5ed661851ceafc2f60745","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/c5a99a279179c16cd97c005bcb8e0b0eba94743abbca266f90d152907842fe408183af25697253e62cce579a4ba35671275724c4ddc5ed661851ceafc2f60745","name":"Emoji Frequency for Alex - 2021_reranked.csv","type":"text/csv","lastModified":1638235025372.84,"size":102907},{"id":"20020322862b1df8a9f0ea944afec75c179c1b9a62e4387d01f6eb0b068b3d69bbf9269088d6b701c2b09d4efe29cc29c250444630a0c573cd7064288f422761","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/20020322862b1df8a9f0ea944afec75c179c1b9a62e4387d01f6eb0b068b3d69bbf9269088d6b701c2b09d4efe29cc29c250444630a0c573cd7064288f422761","name":"emoji.png","type":"image/png","lastModified":1638241902898.856,"size":1245694}] 43:{"id":"87e7eec5478413b0","slug":"unicode-emoji-mirror","title":"The Most Frequently Used Emoji of 2021","thumbnail":"14350b8fede0499d46cdaaa74ed6e1d55a16296f714a758d08350976c5b001c9","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2021-11-30T01:17:05.372Z","update_time":"$D2021-12-02T14:00:11.822Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2021-12-02T13:48:09.821Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":true,"stars":64,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"753184f92845adb6","login":"jenniferdaniel","name":"Jennifer Daniel","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/df3c63bba0bad755be7f6032b49c03982f17cd3f2c95c698074d1de4121d2b5a","tier":"starter_2024","bio":""},"version":1170,"publish_version":1170,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"1d4395f44c474ba6","login":"jenniferdaniel","name":"Jennifer Daniel","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/df3c63bba0bad755be7f6032b49c03982f17cd3f2c95c698074d1de4121d2b5a","tier":null,"bio":""}],"members":[{"type":"individual","id":"82e7428ad69d2032","login":"alancmclean","name":"Alan McLean","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/0fa65974d2d64ecca308682e2f1b800c6d48d8c6bec12a752d13bb3c56e815ba","tier":null,"role":"editor"},{"type":"individual","id":"1d4395f44c474ba6","login":"jenniferdaniel","name":"Jennifer Daniel","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/df3c63bba0bad755be7f6032b49c03982f17cd3f2c95c698074d1de4121d2b5a","tier":null,"role":"editor"}],"comments":[],"custom_thumbnail":true,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":19,"collection":{"id":"6ad523ac4dcb4b45","slug":"instagram-shares","title":"Observable's Instagram Shares","owner":{"id":"f35c755083683fe5","login":"observablehq","name":"Observable"}},"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"The Most Frequently Used Emoji of 2021","cells":[{"id":0,"value":"
