[Mean, Median, and Moose](https://meanmedianmoose.ca/) and [Hackforge](http://hackf.org/) present a tutorial on [DeckGL](https://deck.gl/). DeckGL allows people to build fast and powerful maps quickly. It was originally developed by Uber and then open sourced. In this tutorial we'll take you through how to set up DeckGL in an Observable notebook and then build some visualizations. This information was originally presented at a Hackforge event. You can find a recording [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOzu2PLKGs4). The data set we'll be using is courtest of the City of Windsor, Ontario. They post [datasets about their snow plow activity](https://opendata.citywindsor.ca/opendata/details/224) on their [open data portal](https://opendata.citywindsor.ca/). Observable notebooks already have the code and data included. What this tutorial attempts to do is also provide a textual description of the code and explanations for why the code was written the way it was. We'll wrap this code in a function called getDeckGLMap because we'll be using the same code over and over again to generate the same map with different layers each time. Let's walk through this and see what's happening. The first thing we do is create the function which takes a layers and pitch parameter. We always need a set of layers, but we make the pitch parameter optional by providing a default of zero. \`\`\`js getDeckGLMap = (layers, pitch) => { if (pitch === undefined) { pitch = 0; } [...] } \`\`\` The next thing we do is create a container for the map to be placed in. If you were using DeckGL elsewhere this would look a little different. It's commonly used in ReactJS where DeckGL just becomes a component. In an Observable notebook however, you can define an HTML block as a variable. We then return this element at the end of the function. \`\`\`js let container = html \`

\`; \`\`\` Now we define what map gets displayed in the container by defining a DeckGL component. \`\`\`js let deckgl = new deck.DeckGL({ container, map: mapboxgl, mapboxAccessToken: '', mapboxApiAccessToken: token, mapStyle: 'mapbox://styles/mapbox/dark-v10', layers: layers, initialViewState: { longitude: -82.9835, latitude: 42.2767, zoom: 11.5, pitch: pitch }, controller: true }); \`\`\` The container variable above is the html element we create in the previous step with the magic Observable definiton. We pass the mapbox library into the map parameter and provide a Mapbox access token (you should go get your own if you're going to do this by the way - my tokens are limitted and change often). mapStyle defines the mapbox theme to use. Take a look at all the styles under options.style in [the mapbox documentation](https://docs.mapbox.com/mapbox-gl-js/api/map/) to see your other options. Then we define the layers - we'll talk about those coming up. Finally, we define the initial view state. That is the initial lat/lon of the center of the mpa, a zoom level, and the pitch. `31:T726,md`Now that we have the data, let's map it! We are going to use the function we created earlie to create a DeckGL map and pass it a layer. The layer defines the data to display on the map and how to display it. We're going to start out basic and just plot every point on the map as a small orange circle. If you want to plot circles, the [DeckGL ScatterplotLayer](https://deck.gl/docs/api-reference/layers/scatterplot-layer) is the right choice. \`\`\`js getDeckGLMap([ new deck.ScatterplotLayer({ id: 'scatterplot-layer', data: data, pickable: true, opacity: 1, filled: true, radiusScale: 1, radiusMinPixels: 1, radiusMaxPixels: 1, getPosition: d => [d.Longitude, d.Latitude], getRadius: d => 1, getFillColor: d => [255, 140, 0] }) ]) \`\`\` As you can see, a layer is no more than a bag of parameters and the occasional lambda (anonymous function definition). There are two sets of parameters. The properties are things like opacity, whether the circles are filled, and the radius scale. The other kind of parameter is a data accessor. They're given away above by being prefixed with "get" (getPosition, getRadius, getFillColor). Properties define attributes of the entire layer. Data accessors define what each individual item in the "data" property looks like. They're defined as functions that are called once for every element in the array defined in the data property. getRadius and getFillColor are pretty boring - all of our circles are orange with a radius of 1 meter. getPosition puts them in the right place though by returning an array acting as a long/lat coordinate. One problem with scatterplots though is that people can have trouble discerning details about how frequently a snow plow might be visiting a street or intersection. We can do better by making this into a heatmap instead. How do we do that? Well, with the [Heatmap layer](https://deck.gl/docs/api-reference/aggregation-layers/heatmap-layer)! \`\`\`js getDeckGLMap([ new deck.HeatmapLayer({ id: 'heatmapLayer', data, getPosition: d => [d.Longitude, d.Latitude], aggregation: 'SUM', radiusPixels: 10, colorDomain: [100, 1000] }) ]) \`\`\` Simple enough. The map is split into slightly overlaping circles with a radius of ten pixels. The more points in a circle the redder it looks. colorDomain defines the minimum and maximum values for colours. Here, circles with fewer than 100 points fade out. Circles with 1,000 points or more get the highest colour values - effectively treating all circles with 1,000 or more points the same on the map. I do that because while the defaults can be pretty good for the heatmap layer, but I've adjusted them in this case mainly to prevent plow starting points (city plow storage and service lots) from being the only red circles on the map. The heatmaps look good and give you a feeling of which streets are plowed the most in a period. This is probably why the in-built visualization on the City of Windsor open data portal uses a heatmap. Zoom in and out of the map by scrolling while your mouse pointer is over it and see how the map changes. `33:T78e,md `Okay! So we have some idea of where and how much the snowplows plow in aggregate. But what if you're interested in individual plow paths? Can we visualize those? Indeed we can! First we'll need to build a path (an array of successive coordinates) for each truck. The path array contains all the coordinates for the trucks over time. The timestamps array contains the corresponding timestamps for the trucks. We also want to define a different color for each truck. The are about 230 so that can be tough. We can't really see what's going on. Luckily DeckGL has something called a [Trips layer](https://deck.gl/examples/trips-layer/) to better show trips taken by a fleet of vehicles. Makes sense considering DeckGL was originally developed by Uber! To make this happen right we'll need a slider (or scrubber) to use to travel through time. We'll also need to change the map to take updates from that scrubber without reevaluting the entire cell. Hex maps divide the map into hexagons.
