laob_about = md`${LAOB} publishes <span class="cphf">LANGUAGE ART</span> <i>with</i> <span class="cphf">COMPUTATION</span>.

In early English ‘with’ might have its usual contemporary sense of ‘together with’ and could also be read as ‘against.’ ${LAOB} encourages writers and makers to develop their relationship with the affordances of computation and with innovations that computation brings to culture, especially those that pertain to aesthetic practices of language making. ${LAOB} also promotes critical, investigative relationships amongst language art, computation, and culturally implicated computational infrastructures.

${LAOB}’s delivery medium is the [**Observable**](https://observablehq.com) platform, an infrastructure for live-codeable notebooks, flexibly addressing current web technologies.

${LAOB} is constituted and animated by artist-made Observable notebooks. In internet real time, these notebooks themselves will generate and animate the work published here, in the pages of ${LAOB}’s public-facing website.

${LAOB} is a language art review, devoted to showcasing aesthetic artifacts and events of language. These artifacts and events are taken to comprehend writing as writing’s communities conceive it, but the ${LAOB} will not limit its consideration to such treasured practices and productions.

Uniquely, in the ${LAOB}, published works will link back, seamlessly, to the very notebooks that are animating, dynamically manipulating, or providing commentary on what their readers experience.`

laob_procedures = md`<h1 class="subhead">SUBMISSIONS, COMMISSIONS &amp; PUBLICATION</h1>

${LAOB} will commission, edit, and publish language art that is made and documented in Observable. ${LAOB} will house, introduce, and promote embedded outcomes and also link back to contributors’ notebooks.

In practice ${LAOB} will not restrict submissions or commissions to works made in or with Observable. Standalone web apps will also be welcomed, although even these will be linked back to live-codeable notebook documentation of such pieces.

The ${LAOB} will also accept language art that is more or less devoid of programmatic computational affordances, but, in this case, only so long as it is prepared for publication using an Observable notebook, with some artist-authored commentary.

Commissions and submissions will be considered if their primary compositionally integrated medium is language, and the chief criteria when considering commissions and submissions for publication will be language-art aesthetic.

Submissions, commissions, and actual publication of individual works will all be on a rolling basis.

${LAOB} will have one annual celebration launch. The date of this launch will be unconnected to dates when pieces made or being made for a particular annual are actually made public by the ${LAOB} and all pieces may continue to be developed by their authors as they wish after their publication dates.

After submission-receipt or commission-offer there will be a maximum two-month period prior to acceptance. This time will be used for editorial &amp; peer review, and technical &amp; aesthetic negotiation. This will be followed by a minimum/average two-month period of work to integrate the piece into ${LAOB}’s infrastructure. Each accepted work is published as part of an issue to be celebrated at the next annual launch.`
