This is the visual part of a lengthy tutorial on creating a project with GraphCMS (my employer), importing data and calling it to the front-end. GraphCMS is an excellent headless CMS that provides a native GraphQL API. You can check out the tuorial at the following link! Because this isn't a design tutorial, I'm only recreating the chart partially. To view the whole chart in it's beaty, do check out the awesome work of the Wine Folly people and view the chart at the link below! **Tutorial:** [Create a Project with GraphCMS from Scratch](https://graphcms.com/blog/wine-db/) **Chart:**

This allows us to map values like 'red, white, blue' to numerical output like '100, 200, 300'. It is what drives our entire visual. We 'interpolate' the Wine Class names to positions and colors. We do the same with Food Categories and Food Classes. The general construction of a scale is as such: Declare the type of scale with something like d3.scaleOrdinal. Domain is the type of input, such as our string values. Adding the range tells us what it should map the output to. Domains and ranges can be either discrete or continous. Discrete means they are defined input 'buckets' whereas continous means to use whatever value happens to come in. An example of continuous would be mapping time as an input within an upper and lower bound (say, the length of a day) to the output of blue to red color. Regardless of what time we give as an input, as long as it's within our range, it will produce a unique color value somewhere along that range. I've provided tabular views below to show the mapping of the data. `2c:Tbe7,bottles = { const b1 = `` const b2 = ` ` const b3 = `` const b4 = `` const b5 = `` const b6 = `` return ({ Bold_Red: b1, Dessert: b6, Light_Red: b1, Light_White: b2, Medium_Red: b2, Rich_White: b3, Rose: b3, Sparkling: b4, Sweet_White: b5 })}2d:[] 25:{"id":"fda941d193605949","slug":"the-wine-folly-food-pairing-guide-as-interpreted-by-graphcm","title":"The Wine Folly Food pairing Guide as _powered_ by GraphCMS","thumbnail":"44eb6afb5177fd6303624045327248bb59f60e5ba961ebe59fa9ff36a40b5d5c","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2018-07-10T09:26:38.751Z","update_time":"$D2019-02-07T20:29:25.390Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2018-07-12T15:44:34.083Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":false,"stars":18,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"8ac22c4397aeac05","login":"motleydev","name":"Jesse","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/8b27ded428b05cc7f591fe435f6c819d064f31305a7fa6549eed558c444083ca","tier":"starter_2024"},"version":1010,"publish_version":1010,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"8c731744a285379c","login":"motleydev","name":"Jesse","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/8b27ded428b05cc7f591fe435f6c819d064f31305a7fa6549eed558c444083ca","tier":null}],"members":[{"type":"individual","id":"8c731744a285379c","login":"motleydev","name":"Jesse","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/8b27ded428b05cc7f591fe435f6c819d064f31305a7fa6549eed558c444083ca","tier":null,"role":"editor"}],"comments":[],"custom_thumbnail":false,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":14,"collection":null,"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"The Wine Folly Food pairing Guide as _powered_ by GraphCMS","cells":[{"id":0,"value":"$27","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":800,"value":"md`## Food Pairing Chart`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":3,"value":"$28","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":769,"value":"md`## Wines According to Type`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":682,"value":"wineList = {\n \n const svg = d3.select(DOM.svg(width, 675))\n .style('font', '16px verdana, sans-serif')\n \n const wineBuckets = svg.append('g')\n .selectAll('g')\n .data(wineClassesReduce)\n .enter()\n .append('g')\n \n const bottleHolder = wineBuckets.append('svg')\n .attr('width', 60)\n .attr('height', 200)\n .attr('viewBox', '0 0 45 150')\n .attr('fill', d => wineClassColorScale(d.name))\n .attr('x', (d, i) => Math.floor((i / 3)) * (width / 2))\n .attr('y', (d, i) => (i % 3) * 225)\n \n bottleHolder.html( d => bottles[d.slug])\n \n wineBuckets.append('g')\n .attr('transform', (d,i) => `translate(${(Math.floor((i / 3)) * (width / 2)) + 60}, ${((i % 3) * 225) + margin + 10})`)\n .selectAll('text')\n .data(d => wineReduce.filter(w => d.name == w.class))\n .enter()\n .append('text')\n .attr('y', (d,i) => (largeFont + 6) * i)\n .text(d => d.name)\n\n return svg.node()\n \n}","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":557,"value":"md`## Writing the query\nHere is the query we used to fetch the data.
