(DOI: 10.1186/s12864-017-3976-z). A BioCompute Object (BCO) is a descriptive standard for human-readable explanations of the scientific rationale at each step of a workflow, as well as a high-level description of the work for context. This is extremely helpful for reviewers (regulatory or publication), or simply for lab records so others can follow the work (or so that you can follow your own work later!). But a visualization for a pipeline has not yet been built. The purpose of this notebook is to do that. BCOs have an IO Domain for declaring the inputs and outputs of a BCO, but they also have input and output fields within the Description Domain. A frequent question is what the difference between them is, and how the latter is used. The fields in the Description Domain are used to programmatically construct the pipeline, which is particularly helpful for branching pipelines. Because of this, the fields need not be human readable (there are other descriptive fields in that domain for annotating the step), so any identifier will work. However, if non-unique identifiers (e.g. \`"file:///dev/tmpfs"\`) is used for each step, it is not possible to reconstruct the pipeline, as in the below image. Rather, a unique identifer should be used (e.g. \`uuid\`), so that specific outputs can be connected to specific inputs. You can learn more about (and build) BCOs here.
