Only the calculator cell is embedded there; this note is for whoever maintains it. Maintained by: Nicola Kirkham, OCIAM (Nicola.Kirkham@maths.ox.ac.uk) Last reviewed: September 2026, against the Graduate Research Student Handbook 2025–26 (version 6.4) Sources Term dates: the University's official Dates of term page (ox.ac.uk), which lists Full Terms up to Trinity 2033. Each entry in TERMS is the Sunday of 1st Week. Milestone rules: Mathematical Institute Graduate Research Student Handbook 2025–26, sections 4.1, 7.3.2, 7.3.5, 7.4, 7.4.1 and 8.2.3. How each date is calculated A student's 1st term is the term they start in, and terms are counted consecutively, including the long vacation. Suspensions and extensions aren't accounted for. Milestone Deadline shown Source Transfer of Status (GSO.2) Friday of 0th Week of the 5th term Handbook 7.3.2: transfer should be completed by the end of the 4th term, meaning application, thesis and interview done by Friday of 0th Week of the 5th term Confirmation of Status (GSO.14) Friday of 0th Week of the 10th term Handbook 7.4: confirmation must be completed by the end of the 9th term, meaning application, work and interview done by Friday of 0th Week of the 10th term Thesis submission (GSO.3) Friday of 0th Week of the 13th term Our interpretation, not stated in the handbook. Handbook 8.2.3 gives 12 terms as the normal maximum for the DPhil. We have applied the same Friday-of-0th-Week pattern. Awaiting confirmation from Graduate Studies. Friday of 0th Week is taken as two days before the Sunday of 1st Week. This matches the key dates in Handbook 4.1 (e.g. Friday 0th Week Hilary 2026 = 16 January 2026). "Aim to upload by" (Transfer and Confirmation only) is 8 weeks before the deadline, following the handbook checklists (7.3.5 and 7.4.1), which recommend uploading work 6–8 weeks before the deadline. Card colours: a card turns red with a countdown when its deadline is 60 days away or less, and green once the deadline has passed. The progress line counts whole terms from start to start, so each milestone dot is reached at its deadline. Maintenance Each year: check the new handbook for changes to sections 7.3.2 and 7.4, and update this note's "Last reviewed" line. New term dates: when Oxford publishes a new academic year, add its three terms to the end of TERMS, then increase START_OPTIONS by 3 so the next intake appears in the dropdown. A start term needs 12 further terms listed after it for all three deadlines to show; otherwise the thesis card shows "To be confirmed". Settings at the top of the cell: WARN_DAYS (red warning window, 60) and UPLOAD_WEEKS (upload guidance, 8). Change log September 2026: rebuilt in Observable from the original HTML page. Corrected Trinity 2030 to start 28 April (previously 21 April). Changed deadlines from "end of term" to the handbook's Friday of 0th Week rule. Extended term dates to Trinity 2033 and start terms to Trinity 2029. Added "Aim to upload by" dates.48:[] 44:{"id":"b80d9f4d6fde4288","slug":"dphil_milestone_calculator","title":"DPhil Milestone calculator","thumbnail":"b8cd59684a81a6d4d1afadccdc379176064c7d1e7e72634af4cd7a2a29bc972c","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2026-09-23T15:03:46.788Z","update_time":"$D2026-09-23T19:31:00.509Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2026-09-23T15:31:21.037Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":false,"stars":0,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"a2d97a083fd2a298","login":"nicola7","name":"Nicola","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/5a0496b33973eb70708132dfab9195325584b22fc4b850dd8346a8785e2d48ef","tier":"free_2026","bio":"","following":false},"version":64,"publish_version":null,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"2b9aa7c166da8f72","login":"nicola7","name":"Nicola","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/5a0496b33973eb70708132dfab9195325584b22fc4b850dd8346a8785e2d48ef","tier":null,"bio":"","following":false}],"members":[{"type":"team","id":"a2d97a083fd2a298","login":"nicola7","name":"Nicola","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/5a0496b33973eb70708132dfab9195325584b22fc4b850dd8346a8785e2d48ef","tier":"free_2026","role":"editor"}],"comments":[],"custom_thumbnail":false,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":0,"collection":null,"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"DPhil Milestone calculator","cells":[{"id":1,"value":"# DPhil Milestone calculator","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":2,"value":"$46","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"js","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":8,"value":"$47","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"}],"files":"$W48","stdlib":"2"}} 45:"$44:body"
