2d:null 2e:["$","title",null,{"children":"Announcing the Black History DataViz Contest Winners | Observable | Observable"}] 33:T513,md`# About the contest This February, we [invited](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/black-history-month-dataviz-contest) the Observable community to celebrate Black History Month and Black excellence in data visualization by participating in our first Black History Month DataViz Contest! We asked members of the Observable community to submit a notebook that: - provides insight into some aspect of Black history/culture, - uses data to advocate for racial justice for the Black community, and/or - is directly inspired by the [work of W.E.B. Du Bois](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/first-time-together-and-color-book-displays-web-du-bois-visionary-infographics-180970826/) or another Black data practitioner. The Observable team selected 5 notebooks from the submissions we received, choosing those which we felt used data visualization in interesting, thorough, & original ways to provide insights into the struggle for racial equity and celebrate the accomplishments of the Black community. Each winning author's contribution is rewarded with a $100 USD prize package: - A copy of [W.E.B. Du Bois's Data Portraits: Visualizing Black America](https://bookshop.org/books/w-e-b-du-bois-s-data-portraits-visualizing-black-america/9781616897062) ($30 value) - A $70 gift card `34:T57f, md`# The work doesn't end here We are extremely grateful to everyone who entered the contest, and to our 5 winning authors, for using data and visualization to teach & inspire the community as we all work towards an anti-racist future informed by understanding of the past. Black History Month is a great occasion for learning & celebration, but all 12 months of the year Observable is committed to helping end systemic racism, to supporting the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, and to prioritizing marginalized people’s safety over privileged people’s comfort. To learn more, you can read about our [commitments](https://next.observablehq.com/@observablehq/black-lives-matter-and-anti-racism) and our [collection of notebooks on equality](https://observablehq.com/collection/@observablehq/equality). We will be continuing to amplify the voices of Black creators and those using data to do important work for racial and social justice. Stay tuned for new collections on the [Explore](https://observablehq.com/explore) page, future events showcasing the amazing work of Black & brown creators, and ongoing updates on how we're fulfilling our commitment to support the Black community and the anti-racism movement. ### Get in touch Have a question about the contest?
