**Vladimir Agafonkin** is an open source enthusiast, the author of Leaflet JS library (the industry standard for interactive maps), and maintainer of 40+ other open source libraries with a focus on algorithms, computational geometry and data visualization. He builds the future of maps at Mapbox. Living in Kyiv, Ukraine, Vladimir is also the frontman of progressive rock band Obiymy Doschu and a happy father of twin girls. **Anjana Vakil** suffers from a debilitating case of curiosity, which led her from philosophy to English teaching to computational linguistics to software development. As a developer advocate at Observable, she can often be found coding from her home base in San Francisco; that is, when she's not speaking at events around the world to share the joy of programming and advocate for a more diverse, equitable, and ethical tech industry. Ask her about the Recurse Center, Outreachy, and Mozilla TechSpeakers! Twitter: [@AnjanaVakil](https://twitter.com/AnjanaVakil) `3d:T4cb,md` --- ## Speakers

**Jeremia Kimelman** is a data journalist and interactive graphics developer living in Sacramento, CA. He mostly recently worked at NBC News where he focused on election results and campaign finance data reporting. Twitter: [@jeremiak](https://twitter.com/jeremiak)

**Toph Tucker** has been trying to write articles and essays with code and graphics for a long time, including a couple years as a data journalist, but always found the configuration and setup to be such a slog that almost all of it went unwritten. So when Observable launched it was the biggest productivity boon he’d had in years, and he became a happy and heavy user. In January he was lucky enough to start working here. He is still a slow writer but at least he’s not blocked by spinning up a local server! \n\nIn this live Q&A Anjana Vakil will dig into how software engineer, Vladimir Agafonkin, uses Observable to visualize & understand his everyday life. Vlad has used notebooks to investigate everything from [\"Were childhood winters as snowy as I remember?\"](https://observablehq.com/@mourner/were-kyiv-winters-as-snowy-as-i-remember-as-a-kid) to [\"How consistently have I been working out?\"](https://observablehq.com/@mourner/workout-consistency-heatmap) to [\"How do I avoid dents in reverse parking?\"](https://observablehq.com/@mourner/kinematics-of-reverse-angle-parking). We'll find out how Vlad authors these incredibly fun, beautiful, and insightful notebooks, and get inspired to use visualization to better understand aspects of our own personal lives. \n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":0,"value":"$3c","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":531,"value":"md `\n____`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":522,"value":"html `\n

\nJeremia Kimelman @ Observable Meetup April 2020: The COVID Tracking Project (https://covidtracking.com/) exists because every person, newsroom, and government agency in the United States deserves access to the most complete picture of COVID-19 testing data that can be assembled. The team of volunteers started with a Google spreadsheet, manually updated from state sources every day, and around that core has quickly built an API, website, blog, and a Twitter feed with 172k followers. In this talk, Observable Software Developer Toph Tucker interviews Data Journalist Jeremia Kimelman to understand the struggles of putting this data together and how the Observable platform helped.`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":448,"value":"$3d","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":394,"value":"html`\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"}],"files":"$W3e","stdlib":"1"}} 3b:"$3a:body"
