Observable Introduces: Curated Datasets

At Observable, we kept looking for good datasets to use in our demos and workshops. In our search we realized we'll never find the One True Dataset, so we curated a set of them. We hope this collection balances complexity enough to demonstrate powerful techniques with simplicity to enable learning without too much distraction.

Watch this: Devs for Ukraine

We urge you to take the time to watch this amazing video featuring Observable ambassador Vladimir Agafonkin who is based in Kyiv, Ukraine. He discusses using dataviz for everything from his algorithm work, parking his car, recipes, personal fitness tracking, discovering childhood memories and even for helping him decide when it was ‘safe’ to return to Kyiv with his family.

Observable Plot examples... in just 30 seconds!

We created a series of 30 second videos where we use Observable Plot to create a line chart that compares the change in housing prices over time, explore Bandcamp data by quickly creating a bar chart, and make Seattle temperature data patterns easier to read and analyze.

Tereza from the Observable community participated in the #30daychartchallenge dataviz challenge showing the Vulnerability of Mountain Peoples in the chart below. A total of 346 million people in rural mountain areas in developing countries were estimated to be vulnerable to food insecurity in 2017.

User Requested Product Improvements

🙏 We are thankful for a community that cares and takes time to submit issues on our community feedback repository. Here are some key feature requests and bug fixes that we recently closed:

New meta tags added to user profiles, notebooks, and collections
This newly added set of Open Graph tags will make it easier to surface meta data like publish time, notebook author, and others while sharing or embedding notebooks. Thank you @abenrob for submitting this issue. [#407]
Type inferring in SQL cell columns now works for custom database clients
This fixes the issue with column types sometimes being labeled undefined. Thank you @domoritz for flagging this bug. [#405]
Cell toolbar does not hide the cursor anymore
The cell tool bar no longer hides the cursor while scrolling or when a search result is selected. Thank you @mootari for reporting this bug. [#291]
