## Data Collaboration: an emerging practice Data collaboration for data practitioners is an active, iterative, and transformative process. In fact, data collaboration can become an **organizational practice** focused on better outcomes for the entire business. Each organization must decide and then live the practice. Similar to DevOps, data collaboration is about the symphony that happens between the people, the processes, the tools, and the culture involved. Companies need a new way to thrive in this new world! A **new generation of data tools is needed** that allow each of the cross-functional experts within the data practitioner umbrella, to maximize their effectiveness and seamlessly progress from ideas and data analysis to insights and communication in one space, without tool hopping or hitting a wall with their colleagues. The most empowering part of data collaboration is that each organization can determine its own practices and processes, since it’s not a static deliverable or tied to glueing together disparate tools. 3d:[{"id":"c2dc3041d60fc6b5eeec2b88ffa5bbd758108d5baf31e0a6cd069f704608809f9258d31ed688d0b788c54952ff50da6c4fa84699ecd08ee01d19ca51a3f3387e","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/c2dc3041d60fc6b5eeec2b88ffa5bbd758108d5baf31e0a6cd069f704608809f9258d31ed688d0b788c54952ff50da6c4fa84699ecd08ee01d19ca51a3f3387e","name":"180 tools for data workflow.png","type":"image/png","lastModified":1637370065225.757,"size":590548},{"id":"4708c96a039c6d05bd4507c7e80ee7ba89d754c36c75f2ea1b9d30c1ce23172ed58678d2ef724286c865bf57f5b597d6ba79886bf5221b8c00caffe83cc9fcbe","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/4708c96a039c6d05bd4507c7e80ee7ba89d754c36c75f2ea1b9d30c1ce23172ed58678d2ef724286c865bf57f5b597d6ba79886bf5221b8c00caffe83cc9fcbe","name":"One Space for Data Practitioners.png","type":"image/png","lastModified":1637370065225.757,"size":199606},{"id":"521cd8cdb20b8ab83aefc92a48f4217b9c4ee39443b6f480f73446e0777e86b094414a1c0fc8a8f8b8c21f7f0bf90cd65b4253e55d1d120fbb4bef42bbea9fdc","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/521cd8cdb20b8ab83aefc92a48f4217b9c4ee39443b6f480f73446e0777e86b094414a1c0fc8a8f8b8c21f7f0bf90cd65b4253e55d1d120fbb4bef42bbea9fdc","name":"Complex data workflow@1.png","type":"image/png","lastModified":1638216225101.498,"size":1456424},{"id":"3f4eb250bdb85cb53ba6d55cf0f0f83f7b9a2eaca0a2b13efd147f71bc75abe67b2c5f350d3301af4219c0674c643729f912992e2ba749a6be866e05e5643957","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/3f4eb250bdb85cb53ba6d55cf0f0f83f7b9a2eaca0a2b13efd147f71bc75abe67b2c5f350d3301af4219c0674c643729f912992e2ba749a6be866e05e5643957","name":"Simple data workflow with Observable@1.png","type":"image/png","lastModified":1638216263623.717,"size":1500341}] 38:{"id":"6e8285a927cf730d","slug":"future-of-data-work-empowering-data-practitioners","title":"Future of Data Work: Empowering Data Practitioners in One Place","thumbnail":"3947ae977f11a670861442e7298af400fc8ba50fa2ddea56ab3531f31563af09","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2021-11-20T01:01:05.225Z","update_time":"$D2021-12-07T23:03:27.970Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2021-11-22T17:02:43.249Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":true,"stars":14,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"f35c755083683fe5","login":"observablehq","name":"Observable","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/424c6c1f7794371c9915a160519bdfb34cf34e50069fcd6def38a1a04d4e9702","tier":"enterprise_2024","bio":"The computational, collaborative, agentic document where everyone answers questions with data","followed_by_you":false,"follows_you":false},"version":221,"publish_version":221,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"16da1e6fbb245cdf","login":"deepti","name":"Deepti Srivastava","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/8b0cf353cfdc72d92ce6f24cd0bf30ddbac5091806c2125b0bc6f70cb850edaa","tier":null,"bio":"Head of Product @ObservableHQ","followed_by_you":false,"follows_you":false}],"members":[{"type":"team","id":"f35c755083683fe5","login":"observablehq","name":"Observable","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/424c6c1f7794371c9915a160519bdfb34cf34e50069fcd6def38a1a04d4e9702","tier":"enterprise_2024","role":"editor"}],"comments":[{"id":"7446a151fb55d7b0","reply_to_id":null,"content":"Great viz!","create_time":"$D2022-02-06T02:20:21.991Z","update_time":null,"resolved":false,"user":{"type":"individual","id":"69fbb58022ff02ac","login":"chelseymacneill","name":"ChelseyAnn","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/f2d147bed54820b68d2ee796a5b71c88eee194505b8cff65f1bcf44b7c9bd279","tier":null}}],"custom_thumbnail":true,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":2,"collection":{"id":"01e1972879c83ae3","slug":"observable-blog","title":"Observable Blog","owner":{"id":"f35c755083683fe5","login":"observablehq","name":"Observable"}},"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"Future of Data Work: Empowering Data Practitioners in One Place","cells":[{"id":0,"value":"# Future of Data Work: Empowering Data Practitioners in One Place","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":11,"value":"---","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":6,"value":"## The Challenge with Data ... \n\nOver the last decade, the growth in online technologies and tech-based services has resulted in an explosive growth in data. I saw this first hand, building high performance databases at Oracle, and then building petabyte-scale storage and database services at Google. As the volume of data being generated continues to increase, with the availability of these scalable infrastructure solutions, data storage and retrieval are no longer the biggest challenge*s*. \n\n\n**The biggest challenge facing our connected world today is making sense of this data with ever-increasing data complexity.** For businesses, there is an urgent need for cross-functional teams to quickly discover data-driven insights to inform business decisions. An organization’s success is often tied to the quality and velocity of this decision-making. \n\n
