Another observation: If you move the two points are both inside or both outside the red circle, then the geodesic segment is also all inside or outside it. This is easy to see in the sphere. If the two points are in the same hemisphere, the shortest path is entirely contained int that hemisphere. Finally, there are other remarkable properties about the stereographic projection. Geodesics of the sphere are mapped to circles in the plane and this mapping preserves angles, i.e., the angle which two geodesics intersect is the same angle that the corresponding circles intersect in the plane.
