**A quick note on Observable**

If you have experience with Jupyter notebooks, Observable will look familiar. The biggest difference is that Observable notebooks don't flow from the top down. Instead, a dependency graph is built based on variable relationships. When variables are updated, all downstream cells will automatically update. You can view the dependency chart to the right of the page.

As is common with Observable notebooks, some of the \"business logic\" for this notebook is tucked away in an [**Appendix**](#appendix) at the end of the page.

**You can view the code which generates each cell by clicking to the left of the cell.**

\nOn a technical aside, while the \"pie-bar\" chart below looks simple, the implementation turns out to be pretty complex due to the label placement. To make sure none of the labels overlap, I run a physics simulation with D3 to space them out while making sure they are as close to the bar segment they are labeling as possible.\n
\n
\nThe code can be found under the [**StackedSingleBar cell**](#StackedSingleBar).\n
