In https://observablehq.com/@mootari/collider-sparks I used d3.forceCollide with a strength above 1 to create a spark effect.

ah yes I'm purposely trying to not use d3 (and d3-force which I love) and write my own force simulation but I love your example and that's a really great potential place for adapting
