34:["$","title",null,{"children":"FRK Incarceration in the United States | Tallie Foster | Observable"}] 3c:T5fc,md`The Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is widely remembered as the abolition of slavery, though it has a key componenet that impacts hundreds of thousands of Americans. This component, known as “the Thirteenth Amendment Loophole” or the marker for “the New Jim Crow,” qualifies the use of state-sanctioned slavery for punitive purposes in the form of prison labor. Companies such as McDonalds, Starucks, American Airlines, Whole Foods, and Fidelity Investments are all part of a long list of companies who benefit from the cheap cost of prison labor, as do their customers. As of 2005, when the last publicly-available census of U.S. prisons was completed, 1.5 million prisoners were partaking in such labor. Because of this lack of transparency, there is no clear value for the amount that prison labor contributes to national and state economies, but it is estimated to be over a $1 billion industry, of which incarcerated workers see very little earnings from. The geovisualizations created in this project will represent the demographics of prisons and prison labor wages by state. I aim to communicate incarceration rates based on the percentage of each state's population that is in custody, both as a whole and by racial demographic. Incarceration rates in the U.S. are part of a complex web of social and political decisions, which money plays a major role in. As such, along with incarceration by demographic, I intend to represent the range of wages that incarcerated workers earn in each state. `3d:T519,md`Data on prison labor wages by state comes from research conducted by the Prison Policy Institute based on a variety of state policies and other organizational sources. I hope to represent the range of wages earned (i.e. $0.50 to $1.50) as “donut” proportional symbols. The thickness of the symbol would be proportional to the range of wages earned, the overall size would be based on the highest value, and the transparent center would be based on the size of the lowest value. I think this might be referred to as a multivariate compound symbol. An imperfect example is below, referring to the yellow & green combined symbols. However, it would be best if the yellow part was transparent, and all that was visible was what green is currently not covered by the yellow. Wage data exists for both privately owned corporations and state-owned operations. I hope to map both, and allow the user to toggle between which to show. Alternatively, if it's easier for the audience, I can consider the lowest and the highest of the two ranges and combine them into one range rather than two. Should proportional range symbols not be possible or most appropriate, an alternative would be to add bar graphs alongside the maps, or to use two proportional circles per state with thick strokes and no fill. `3e:T586,// http://www.joshuastevens.net/cartography/make-a-bivariate-choropleth-map/ //These are different sets of color schemes that are recognized as effective for bivariate choropleth mapping, defined as "schemes" to be called on in other parts of the code. The schemes are named & assigned an order of objects in the "scheme" array. Different sets of colors can be selected by changing the object number in the "colors" line, as well as from the drop-down bar attached above the map. Colors can be adjusted by replacing hex codes. The colors are based on divergent schemes, though not necessarily total opposite colors. Each set has 9 colors, meant to mix in hue to represent three different classifications for both variables: low, medium, high. schemes = [ { name: "RdBu", colors: [ "#e8e8e8", "#e4acac", "#c85a5a", "#b0d5df", "#ad9ea5", "#985356", "#64acbe", "#627f8c", "#574249" ] }, { name: "BuPu", colors: [ "#e8e8e8", "#ace4e4", "#5ac8c8", "#dfb0d6", "#a5add3", "#5698b9", "#be64ac", "#8c62aa", "#3b4994" ] }, { name: "GnBu", colors: [ "#e8e8e8", "#b5c0da", "#6c83b5", "#b8d6be", "#90b2b3", "#567994", "#73ae80", "#5a9178", "#2a5a5b" ] }, { name: "PuOr", colors: [ "#e8e8e8", "#e4d9ac", "#c8b35a", "#cbb8d7", "#c8ada0", "#af8e53", "#9972af", "#976b82", "#804d36" ] } ]3f:T433,//the legend portion of this line of code draws the legend for the map based on code previously input to define "legend".
