29:null 2a:["$","title",null,{"children":"Sankey circular deconstructed | Tom Shanley | Observable"}] 2f:T7bf, md`I've been trying to improve the d3 sankey library, so that it can handle circular links, and draw links and nodes to reduce overlaps. This initially resulted in the [d3-sankey-circular](https://github.com/tomshanley/d3-sankey-circular) library, which did achieve the goal of handling circular links, and some optimisation to how the nodes and links are laid out. However it did not handle graphs with multiple long links well, nor was very stable when the user adjusts some of the parameters. Trying to optimise the various functions has been hard, as the inner-workings are often opaque as to the layout they return at every stage of the process. This notebook deconstructs the library to show the layouts at each stage, so that I (and hopefully others) can try to optimise each function. Specifically this notebook trials these changes to d3-sankey-circular: ## Virtual nodes and links to draw long paths The use of virtual nodes and links to create paths for the links that span multiple columns. The virtual links are used to generate the path "d" data for the link in the final graph. The virtual nodes are added to the nodes array, so that the normal layout function determines their placement in each column, so they don't overlap other nodes. Then these nodes are replaced when the final graph is drawn with a path that travels through their coordinates. Also, the update removes the step that tries to adjust nodes out of the way of long links. ## Sort nodes The ability to sort the nodes with regards to which column they appear in the drawn graph. This is useful for when circular links result in nodes appearing in the order that they are loaded in the initial array. This would allow updates to the graph to occur while keeping the nodes in the correct order. The sort order is determined using a function that gets a value from the nodes' element.
