Focus groups were conducted in-person (except in Germany), in a neutral locations to avoid contexts linked to the participants or connoted with institutional, intellectual or institutional power relations. Focus groups were segregated by sex (male and female separated groups, with same-sex facilitators), while Denmark also carried out one mix-sexes group. The number of participants per groups varied between 6 and 10 (except in Denmark, with smaller groups). All countries (except Denmark) further controlled the internal homogeneity of groups' participants in terms of age, social class and education. Framing of gender problems in five domains

The figure presents a matrix that cross-tabulates frames of understanding gender problems (rows) with social domains in which these problems emerge (columns). Along the rows, four types of frames are distinguished: theory-centered, actor-centered, discourse-centered, and policy-centered. Along the columns, five arenas are represented: welfare, security, family, migration, and economy.
At each intersection of a row and a column, a circle is plotted. The size of the circle is proportional to the frequency with which participants in the focus groups used a given frame to locate gender problems in the corresponding domain. Larger circles indicate more frequent associations, while smaller circles indicate less frequent ones.

The visualization also allows filtering by country and by the sex of participants: When all countries are selected, the circles represent the number of countries in which a particular frame–domain association was made.
