2c:null 2d:["$","title",null,{"children":"Swag, a Based* Analysis | Anna Wiederkehr | Observable"}] 32:T5c3,Recently, a colleague mentioned (yes, in passing) that Soulja Boy claims to have invented swag. I was simultaneously in agreement and disagreement with that notion at the time because, _for real_? If you google around, there are [definitely some claims](https://www.vice.com/en/article/r3pmb6/five-things-soulja-boy-invented) of what Soulja Boy invented during his time in the spotlight in the early 2000s. I mean, looking back at [some of his videos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47Fbo4kU2AU), he was _the_ rapper of an earlier (read: better) phase of the internet. Also [he was made for TikTok](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UFIYGkROII). Keep googling and you'll find [several](https://www.mandatory.com/living/1182175-swagger-hell-come) [boring](https://bitterrivals.us/who-started-saying-swag-in-rap/) [blog](https://smspantherpress.wordpress.com/2015/01/21/slang-origins-the-history-of-swag/) [posts](https://www.scmp.com/magazines/post-magazine/short-reads/article/2153966/jay-z-one-who-made-swag-cool-guess-which-famous) regurgitating dictionary definitions of swag. Then you'll find [this article from Slate](https://slate.com/culture/2012/03/who-invented-swag-and-swagger-jay-z-soulja-boy-brand-nubian.html), which, I also have to point to here, because it's pretty much all there is questioning the origin of swag in hip-hop. The TL;DR of the article is this: **Jay-Z claims to have invented (or at least popularized) the use of the word swag in hip-hop.**33:T5e3, **Bello Figo** ${topFour.filter(d => d.name === "Bello Figo").length} songs **Lil B** ${topFour.filter(d => d.name === "Lil B").length} songs **Money Bo**y ${topFour.filter(d => d.name === "Money Boy").length} songs
**Soulja Boy** ${topFour.filter(d => d.name === "Soulja Boy").length} songs **Soulja Boy Tell ’Em & Lil B** ${topFour.filter(d => d.name === "Soulja Boy Tell ’Em & Lil B").length} songs34:T45f,Even from all of the artist who have **two or more swag-titled songs**, Soulja Boy has the longest swag career – 14 years – if we measure that by the commitment of including swag in his song titles. Both of his first swag hits (_Booty Got Swag_ and _Turn My Swag On_) were released on [iSouljaBoyTellem](https://open.spotify.com/album/2zwyBK8ea29FqWuY8IiRJu) in 2008 and he is the only of the top four to release a swag song _after_ 2018. [It's terrible](https://open.spotify.com/track/1NQv0miSa0yR3KjkOzZ7Nn?autoplay=true), by the way. Only the comical German rapper, Money Boy, comes close with an eight year commitment. His first song _[Dreh den Swag auf](youtube.com/watch?v=Jcn1gkpPBfY)_ (a one-for-one rip of Soulja Boy's _Turn My Swag On_) in 2010 to his most recent _[Yolohafte Swagnachten](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtnKBbGbAB8)_ ("Yolo-like Swag Night," a play on Christmas) in 2018. 35:T453,These four songs are in the top five by share of swag to all other words and by sheer number of swags. Here they are for your closer inspection. But, as a note, computationally parsing or parsing by my eyeballs was extremely tedious because of obvious issues like typos and then some not-so-obvious issues such as: - Should _Rarri_ and _Rari_ (reference to a Ferrai) be consistent? - Should _Bro_ and _Bruh_ be consistent? - Should _Twitter.com_ be written out as "Twitter Dot Com" (Also, Google+ to Google Plus?) - Should _Ridin_, _Hoppin_, _Jumpin_, _Callin_, _Motherfuckin_, and _Ballin_ (among others) include a "g" at the end? - _Wit_ or With? ...and the list goes on. 36:T4b1,

A note on the etymology

${md` _I'm not a linguist but_ 😉 the etymology of swag is boring. [Whoever penned this Merriam-Webster entry](https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/history-of-swag), though, seemed pretty convinced that swag reflects much more than what I can see in this four letter word. They write that, given its changing meaning over the centuries, "[Swag] is a word that well represents the story of English." Meh. We could probably say that about a lot of [words](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/troll#h3), [names](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Karen) and [phrases](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Bless%20your%20heart) considering how they've changed in the age of the internet. `}
