And for a more thorough and formal introduction, be sure to check out University of Washington Interactive Data Lab’s [Data Types, Graphical Marks, and Visual Encoding Channels](https://observablehq.com/@uwdata/data-types-graphical-marks-and-visual-encoding-channels?collection=@uwdata/visualization-curriculum)._ Previously, we looked at how to quickly make a few simple charts with Vega-Lite. We’re going to expand on that with several different types of charts and pick up a few tricks as we go. With Vega-Lite, it’s useful to think less of “chart type” and more of “what ‘mark’ am I trying to make?” where a [mark](https://vega.github.io/vega-lite/docs/mark.html) is the shape you’re drawing with. These marks turn out to be more generic and reusable than you’d think. For example, a circle can be used in a scatter chart, sized differently to create a [bubble chart](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubble_chart), or placed at geographical coordinates in a map. `47:[{"id":"15efd91760d0d4e41178e1df9623331b6bf519122ff44ff6837e776471a1d4c58f035eafc13b2c66112dbb79f0a1d4dcea50bbfd2609ac5f79ce74b3b60fb3e5","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/15efd91760d0d4e41178e1df9623331b6bf519122ff44ff6837e776471a1d4c58f035eafc13b2c66112dbb79f0a1d4dcea50bbfd2609ac5f79ce74b3b60fb3e5","name":"alphabet.csv","type":"text/csv","lastModified":1588613173643.329,"size":275},{"id":"0831a98223e35f74b29fddadaffac097db10bc983dab5a7f1db577dabcd95530fafcd04189daa8521913863bc0c45e9a75d204f9888e28ef0d5ce11a727489e5","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/0831a98223e35f74b29fddadaffac097db10bc983dab5a7f1db577dabcd95530fafcd04189daa8521913863bc0c45e9a75d204f9888e28ef0d5ce11a727489e5","name":"github.csv","type":"text/csv","lastModified":1588613173643.329,"size":21059},{"id":"6f8011ba66728271a83cae0f6df7fe12d223ac73e80a79f55a723f86725b9d936ac8a3c242865b0df0839e0f5a5da73d6bcc3a7921b1dc81b8d5fa0d0a680915","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/6f8011ba66728271a83cae0f6df7fe12d223ac73e80a79f55a723f86725b9d936ac8a3c242865b0df0839e0f5a5da73d6bcc3a7921b1dc81b8d5fa0d0a680915","name":"pwm-weather@1.csv","type":"text/csv","lastModified":1588613173643.329,"size":31922},{"id":"02568b04f00fe2c5569021d177f04078aad7afebbbc79b57d7e3205d30e57414ce913fcd0b98bae26984252242cde4a65d4b0b3d58d4130d714474a7756545e5","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/02568b04f00fe2c5569021d177f04078aad7afebbbc79b57d7e3205d30e57414ce913fcd0b98bae26984252242cde4a65d4b0b3d58d4130d714474a7756545e5","name":"market-cap.csv","type":"text/csv","lastModified":1588613173643.329,"size":60262},{"id":"f3204c83a2976743cab7b1cef8903b81d651f24988798b76ab52d5cc6de68f2bb8d4813f369a1bfc278bcd5ce058f1d213a52cb2deac86c6509b705152eba20a","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/f3204c83a2976743cab7b1cef8903b81d651f24988798b76ab52d5cc6de68f2bb8d4813f369a1bfc278bcd5ce058f1d213a52cb2deac86c6509b705152eba20a","name":"BP 20 - MARZO.xlsx","type":"application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet","lastModified":1588613174772.455,"size":535985}] 44:{"id":"0397416d625ecb5e","slug":"vega-lite-chart-types","title":"Vega-Lite Chart Types","thumbnail":"3d6dbc8156ba4767ba252c49a0d7609d15dc667f79df57b90a0b75ac796add56","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2020-05-04T17:26:13.643Z","update_time":"$D2020-05-05T07:14:15.875Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2020-05-04T17:26:40.911Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":{"id":"9744002c9bab7a83","slug":"vega-lite-chart-types","title":"Vega-Lite Chart Types","owner":{"id":"2493d15dbb37f449","login":"guoz24","name":"Zhao Cheng Guo"}},"stars":1,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"1a6195454b8de743","login":"yachtaccesories","name":"Pablo de los Reyes","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/2d83c0850084d5af788743f0e5d1e211524027233221919dbd6b7c952b52edc7","tier":"starter_2024","bio":"","following":false},"version":2352,"publish_version":2352,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"1a1735d3f89ea98d","login":"yachtaccesories","name":"Pablo de los Reyes","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/2d83c0850084d5af788743f0e5d1e211524027233221919dbd6b7c952b52edc7","tier":null,"bio":"","following":false}],"members":[{"type":"individual","id":"1a1735d3f89ea98d","login":"yachtaccesories","name":"Pablo de los Reyes","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/2d83c0850084d5af788743f0e5d1e211524027233221919dbd6b7c952b52edc7","tier":null,"role":"editor"}],"comments":[],"custom_thumbnail":false,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":4,"collection":null,"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"Vega-Lite Chart Types","cells":[{"id":1050,"value":"$46","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":0,"value":"md`Type | Examples | Mark / Method\n---|--- | ---\n[Bar](#bars):
