These tools break visualization design down into a process of specifying _mappings_ (or _visual encodings_) between data fields and the properties of graphical objects. Both tools are useful for **concisely and rapidly creating recognizable visualizations**, while providing more design flexibility (or expressivity) than the chart typologies commonly found in spreadsheet tools. However, describing visualization design in these high-level terms **limits the types of visualizations we can create**. For example, we can only use the available marks, and can only bind data to supported encoding channels, in Vega-Lite and Tableau. What if you want to create a central hub of continuously updated data like the [New York Times Covid cases dashboard](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/covid-cases.html), or an interactive data story like [this piece by The Pudding on the repetitiveness in pop songs](https://pudding.cool/2017/05/song-repetition/)? This is where a programming library like [**D3.js**](https://d3js.org/) can be very useful and at times necessary. With D3, we still specify how data values map to the properties of graphical marks, but we now have an additional set of operators to specify this mapping with more **fine-grained control**. We also get far more control over the **interaction capabilities** of the visualizations.
