For many, learning SQL can be difficult because it is very different from common programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or R. Not to worry – our very own [Paul Buffa](https://observablehq.com/@pstuffa?tab=profile) will make SQL easy to learn and perhaps even _fun._\n\nIn this course, you’ll learn the SQL basics for pulling and wrangling data, including: the main SQL clauses (SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, etc.), aggregation functions, joins, window functions and how to impress your friends and colleagues with lightning fast queries. It is geared toward those who work with data and may have some familiarity with SQL, but have not written many queries. To note, we'll also get into more advanced topics that can be helpful for even the experienced SQL user. \n\n____","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":10,"value":"## Sessions","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":11,"value":"details(\n md`\n### Get Data from a Database\n** May 23rd **\n- What are relational databases?\n- Working with SQL in Observable, DuckDB\n- The SQL clauses\n- SELECT, SELECT DISTINCT and GROUP BY`\n)","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":12,"value":"details(\n md`### Joins and Filters\n** May 24th **\n- What is a JOIN?\n- To LEFT JOIN or not to LEFT JOIN\n- ANSI-style JOIN\n- AND, OR, BETWEEN\n- WHERE vs HAVING\n- WITH statements, nested SELECT`\n)","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":13,"value":"details(\n md`### Common SQL Functions\n** May 30th **\n- Aggregation functions, such as count, count distinct, sum, average\n- Case expressions, Coalesce\n- In, Like, Wildcard, Exists `\n)","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":14,"value":"details(\n md`### Advanced Queries\n** May 31st **\n- Window functions\n- Query optimization\n- SQL dialects`\n)","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":15,"value":"___\n## Course Format\n- 4x 1-hour live events (will be recorded)","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":16,"value":"
