You describe the execution of your visualization well, and it seems that you had some good responses to the feedback you received. There are still a number of design aspects that could be better motivated. (Why are the state and age-range interactions important given the data and the questions/tasks to which it would likely be put?) Why do we care about the top 15 names, and in what situation would we want to check them on and off? There can be a tendency in building interactive visualizations to afford _every_ type of interaction that can be programmed, giving the user total freedom to do what they want. However, this might result in the user not really knowing _what_ question they want to answer.
The mouse-over/gray-out interaction is particularly useful. Given the overlapping, dense nature of the lines that you identified in the original visualization, being able to see a _single_ line's pattern overlaid on all of the others is helpful.
