Music therapy has been applied as a clinical psychotherapy method, whereas film therapy has yet to be explored. This study aims to investigate the potential relationships between personality traits and film genre preferences, personality traits and movie-watching frequency, as well as the interrelationship among personality traits, genre preferences, and movie-watching frequency, with the goal of exploring the feasibility of film therapy and offering recommendations for the development of psychotherapy. #### Study Scope Currently, the main genres of movies can be categorized as follows: Comedy, Romance, Action, Horror, Mystery/Thriller, Animation, Sci-Fi, War, Historical, and Drama. The Big Five Personality Test is a psychological assessment tool that measures an individual’s personality across five broad dimensions: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. Each dimension represents a spectrum, with individuals scoring somewhere along the continuum for each trait.

Openness reflects the degree of intellectual curiosity, creativity, and preference for novelty and variety.
Conscientiousness indicates a tendency for self-discipline, carefulness, and dependability.
Extraversion measures sociability, enthusiasm, and assertiveness in social situations.
Agreeableness assesses compassion, cooperativeness, and a preference for social harmony.
Neuroticism captures emotional stability and the tendency to experience negative emotions such as anxiety and moodiness.

The Big Five model is widely used in psychology research and is regarded as a reliable and valid measure for understanding personality. It provides insights into how individuals may respond to various environments and helps predict patterns of behavior across different situations. #### Study Process

Firstly, this study collected participants’ movie-watching characteristics through a [questionnaire](https://observablehq.com/@nujguerra/survey-on-movie-watching-intentions-and-personalit), including their film genre preferences and movie-watching frequency, and assesses participants’ personality traits using the Big Five Personality Test.
Secondly, for the collected data, this study will use various statistical methods for data cleaning, data organization, and data analysis.
Then, data visualization will be achieved by combining three technical tools: D3, Vega-Lite, and Tableau.
Finally, the insights will be presented in the form of a website to enhance interactivity.

Ideally, these insights could contribute to psychotherapy research or simply provide interesting findings about personality. #### Data Source The data was collected and managed by the author herself via a Tencent Form. There were no age or location restrictions for respondents. From early August to late September 2021, the form was posted on several social media platforms, including WeChat and Weibo, with responses collected directly through Tencent Form's backend. Additionally, the author joined film-related groups to reach more respondents, aiming to make the survey results more representative and reliable. 34:[{"id":"8590f0f7c8d126c76f02aef7b9cd081900422121c3234d60a454938e67a611c93c7f910d444878d1fce1dadd03a2f0d452ea4539302c147729323fff1045be23","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/8590f0f7c8d126c76f02aef7b9cd081900422121c3234d60a454938e67a611c93c7f910d444878d1fce1dadd03a2f0d452ea4539302c147729323fff1045be23","name":"movie_personality_dataset.csv","type":"text/csv","lastModified":1730170799060.351,"size":61364}] 2f:{"id":"3de14335ee0d5019","slug":null,"title":"Exploring the Feasibility of Film Therapy (Project Proposal)","thumbnail":"a81d03446241779f1b55a2620866f212620c5c3baf3520b2c331294f168c3e0a","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2024-10-28T14:54:27.241Z","update_time":"$D2024-12-08T19:23:36.285Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2024-10-29T19:00:55.476Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":false,"stars":0,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"afbaa6d30585fd36","login":"nujguerra","name":"Northeastern University John A.
