25:["$","title",null,{"children":"Interactive Multi-scale Turing Patterns | Ped Ram | Observable"}] 49:Ta1e,md` This notebook implements an interactive version of Jonathan McCabe's multiscale Turing patterns from the paper [Cyclic Symmetric Multi-Scale Turing Patterns](http://www.henrydavidlouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/Papers/McCabe%20-%20Cyclic_Symmetric_Multi-Scale_Turing_Patterns.pdf). The output is tweeted (daily, perhaps, we'll see?) at [Multiscale Turing Bot](https://twitter.com/MSTuringBot). Some nice references if you want to learn more about how the patterns work are: - Jonathan McCabe's [Cyclic Symmetric Multi-Scale Turing Patterns](http://www.henrydavidlouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/Papers/McCabe%20-%20Cyclic_Symmetric_Multi-Scale_Turing_Patterns.pdf) - Blake Jones' [Turing clouds - how they work](https://foo.net/projects/turing-clouds/background.html) - Softology's [Multi-Scale Turing Patterns](Multi-Scale Turing Patterns) (Also, <3 to [Lionel Radisson](https://observablehq.com/@makio135) and [Matt Dzugan](https://observablehq.com/@mattdzugan/imitation-game) for inspiring [the thumbnail design](https://observablehq.com/@makio135/creative-coding).) Tips and tricks: - Some configurations are more amenable to "painting" than others. For the most part everything disappears instantly. Don't worry, I know. - [Randomize all](#scaleParams) to create a new random pattern. Select [restart on parameter change](#restartOnParamChange) to restart whenever things change. - If you find a pattern you like, [increase the size](#scaleFactor) and render it at higher resolution! It will resample when the size is changed to preserve the appearance. - The speed is cranked way up to make it more interactive. To render nice patterns, try [turning down the step size](#defaultStepSize) and [turning up the contrast](#contrast). - To speed things up a bit, [reduce the number of scales](#numScales) to two or four. Each pair of two scales requires a full Fast Fourier Transform on every frame. - Symmetry will affect the painting. [Set the symmetry to 1](#maxRandomSymmetry) and then randomize to disable it. - If you're feeling brave, try [rendering to a video](#renderToVideo) (if you reorder the cells, you'll be able to see the progress bar and the image at the same time). - Changing the brush parameters has an issue on mobile. I'm not sure what it is. Comments? Questions? [Let me know](https://twitter.com/rickyreusser)! ${ highpColorType === 'half float' ? html`
