Students will engage with themes including environmental sustainability, fairness, equality, and social cohesion.* As technology enters all aspects of our lives, designers are faced with an ever-increasing array of ethical and social challenges. Technology is increasingly amplifying existing inequalities and injustices such as racist and sexist discrimination through new algorithms, social media, and machine learning, as well as contributing to environmental destruction through energy-consuming computational systems. In this class, students will learn about a growing body of design research that is responding to the challenges we face as a species on a finite planet. Design, as a broad field of study and practice, is investing in new ways to respond to these challenges. It is also taking responsibility for the impact of technology on these challenges. Students will be introduced to frameworks, approaches, perspectives, methods and tools from design that: a) critically examine the ways in which design harms people and the planet, and b) reposition design towards justice, sustainability, fairness and equality. The class will be facilitated by engaging and experimental forms of learning. Through case studies and practical experiments, students will gain experience of justice-led design. Central will be adopting a critical perspective to design that both interrogates the ethical and social challenges triggered by technology, and finds new roles for designers to address issues of justice. 4a:T890,### Week 7: #### Surveillance Capitalism: The Future of Work in Worlds of Surveillance
How should we think about and design for a workplace where data generated from work activities is used to judge and predict abuse, expertise and productivity? (Christian, 2022) In this lecture we will cover what Shoshanna Zuboff (2015) has branded ’surveillance capitalism’ and how issues related to integrity, micro-targeting and efforts to change behaviour in social media translate to employees, to people at work. How should we think about and design for the ‘captive audience’ of the workforce, when surveillance and monitoring is increasingly common? (Marx, 2022) Following Sasha Constanza-Chock’s call to ‘Consider your negative impact’, we will discuss what critical questions we might ask when our design materials include data from monitoring employees. How should we think about these data ‘clones’ and the impact on the ‘quality of others’ lives through exploitative practices’? (Costanza-Chock, 2018) The tutorial will feature a design ’pre-mortem’ as a practical tool. Using design examples from Slack, Google Workspace and Microsoft Teams in a group exercise we will consider that the design failed from a design justice perspective. What went wrong in terms of surveillance, exploitation, discrimination and inequity? How did we end up being exploitative, impacting negatively on the environment, community resources and the quality of others’ lives? > *Reading*: Christian, A. The debate will present one or more perspectives on a current technology, exposing the forms of inequity and injustice that technology enacts or amplifies. The group will discuss alternative approaches to designing the technology that are justice-led, seeking to improve the conditions for those being marginalised, exploited or discriminated against. ### Experiments in Design Justice (individual work, 70%) In this individual coursework, you will experiment with one or more data sources, and experiment with telling different stories about how this data source intersects with the use of a chosen technology. you'll demonstrate how the technology creates the conditions and enacts injustices. This will form the basis for you to envisage a radically different kind of technological intervention, one that improves the conditions people (or nonhumans) are living in.4c:[] 29:{"id":"4ac2aecd660a7820","slug":null,"title":"💪 Design Justice ✊🏽","thumbnail":"67f6227e459d90bb8b11a51166d891cc40966f939cdf224241f8fc9bbf7125b9","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2022-12-09T13:36:00.359Z","update_time":"$D2023-02-06T11:10:46.747Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2022-12-09T13:36:00.359Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":true,"stars":0,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"1aac64fc9246619b","login":"axniks","name":"Axel Niklasson","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/c9a7d1fba263992b6c77e1da1c58b92f3f30d75e1e58268084a4c75edcae99fb","tier":"starter_2024","bio":"","followed_by_you":false,"follows_you":false},"version":293,"publish_version":null,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"9bd8eaa507ce2322","login":"axniks","name":"Axel Niklasson","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/c9a7d1fba263992b6c77e1da1c58b92f3f30d75e1e58268084a4c75edcae99fb","tier":null,"bio":"","followed_by_you":false,"follows_you":false}],"members":[{"type":"individual","id":"9bd8eaa507ce2322","login":"axniks","name":"Axel Niklasson","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/c9a7d1fba263992b6c77e1da1c58b92f3f30d75e1e58268084a4c75edcae99fb","tier":null,"role":"editor"},{"type":"individual","id":"703c1ff258ec5035","login":"alextaylor","name":"Alex Taylor","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/1cc25a06be4a76aa3586af61178fc2af685880e6d27739e3c08f93a8941ca4ca","tier":null,"role":"viewer"}],"comments":[],"custom_thumbnail":false,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":1,"collection":null,"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"💪 Design Justice ✊🏽","cells":[{"id":0,"value":"# 💪 Design Justice ✊🏽\n## A ten-week class for postgraduate students - Please fork ☝️\n---\n**Version:** 0.1
