Combined with information about x- and y-values (variable mappings), these geoms will produce a plot with a shape at (or connecting, e.g. in the case of a line graph) coordinates in the data. For example, `geom_point`, when provided with x- and y- values, creates a plot with a point at each x-y coordinate to make a scatterplot. In Observable Plot, **marks** similarly determine the *shapes* that make up your plot (e.g. points, lines, bars, etc.), with their position bound to data values. Common geoms (in ggplot2) and marks (in Plot) include: | Plot type | ggplot2 | Plot | | ----------- | --------------- | ---------| | Scatterplot | `geom_point` | `Plot.dot` | | Line graph | `geom_line` | `Plot.line` | | Bar / column graph | `geom_bar`, `geom_col` | `Plot.barX`, `Plot.barY` | | Boxplot | `geom_boxplot` | `Plot.boxX`, `Plot.boxY`| **Note:** There are some _named plot types_ that exist as out-of-the-box geoms in ggplot2, that require combinations of a *mark* and a transform to create in Plot. One example is a histogram. In ggplot2, `geom_histogram` automatically creates bins, counts observations in each bin, and produces a histogram: `ggplot(data = penguins) +`
`geom_histogram(aes(x = flipper_length_mm))`49:T8d4,## From _variable mappings_ to _data bindings_ When we make a plot, the position and/or size of the plot shapes (e.g. points, bars) is connected to *data values*. Connecting data values to visual properties is often referred to as *aesthetic mapping* in `ggplot2`, and *data binding* in `Plot`: "To make a plot, we bind columns of data to visual properties of marks" (from [Plot: Marks and channels](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/plot-marks)). The **bold text** in the side-by-side examples below are where variable values (in this case, `flipper_length_mm` and `body_mass_g`) are mapped (bound) to plot aesthetics. In this example, the values for `flipper_length_mm` and `body_mass_g` are bound to the x- and y- axis scales, respectively. | `ggplot2` | Observable `Plot` | | ----------- | --------------- | | `ggplot() +`
   `geom_point(data = penguins,`
                          `aes(x = flipper_length_mm,`
                                      `y = body_mass_g)`
                          )|`Plot.plot({`
   `marks: [`
      `Plot.dot(penguins,`
                                  `{x: "flipper_length_mm",`
                                    `y: "body_mass_g"}``)`
                  `]`
`})`| 4a:T58c,In addition to binding data to plot positions as shown above, we can also bind data to other visual properties, like mark color or size. Let's compare a ggplot2 and Plot example that binds data to position (x and y scale) _and_ a color scale. **First, in `ggplot2`.** Here, `color = species` maps species onto point color. In other words, each distinct group in the "species" column of the penguins data will be bound to a different color: `ggplot() +`
    `geom_point(data = penguins,`
                            `aes(x = flipper_length_mm,`
                                    `y = body_mass_g`
                                    `color = species)`
`)`4b:T446,## Scales Scales serve the same purpose in ggplot2 and Plot: to map data values to aesthetic values like mark position, color, or size. Here, we'll compare three (of many) ways that scales are used in ggplot2 and Plot visualizations: limits, scale transforms, and color scales. 4c:T458,### _Axis limits_ We can use scales to customize the limits of plot axes, for example to reduce or expand the x- or y-axis range. We'll consider a specific case where we adjust the x-axis range for a continuous quantitative variable. **In ggplot2:** `scale_x_continuous(limits = c(low, high))` `ggplot() +`
    `geom_point(data = penguins,`
                            `aes(x = flipper_length_mm,`
                                    `y = body_mass_g)`
                                    `) + `
`scale_x_continuous(limits = c(150, 250))` 4d:T51c,### _Color scales_ In the examples above, we adjusted positional scales with limits and a transform. We can similarly customize the color scale. In the examples below, the palette of values bound to the data is updated to "viridis". **Color scale update in ggplot2:** `ggplot() +`
    `geom_point(data = penguins,`
                            `aes(x = flipper_length_mm,`
                                    `y = body_mass_g,`
                                    `color = body_mass_g)`
                                    `) + `
`scale_color_viridis_c()`4e:T4ab,Faceting splits a data visualization into multiple panels based on one or more faceting variables. In the examples below, histograms of penguin flipper length are faceted by species. **Faceting in ggplot2:** Faceting in ggplot2 is commonly done using [`facet_wrap`](https://ggplot2.tidyverse.org/reference/facet_wrap.html) or [`facet_grid`](https://ggplot2.tidyverse.org/reference/facet_grid.html). In the example below, a histogram of penguin flipper lengths is split into separate panels based on the different unique groups within the species column (Adelie, Chinstrap, and Gentoo). `ggplot() +`
    `geom_histogram(data = penguins,`
                                    `aes(x = flipper_length_mm)`

Let's break down what's happening here: \n\n- `viewof` creates an element that \"directly controls a value in the notebook\". Learn more in the [Introduction to views](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/views).\n- `sizeInput` names the widget output, so it can be referred to later on (in our Plot)\n- `Inputs.range()` creates a value range widget. Learn about other [Observable Inputs](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/inputs)\n- `d3.extent()` here will determine the minimum and maximum values of `body_mass_g` in the `penguins` dataset, and those become the endpoints of the slider\n- `label` creates the slider title (or prompt)\n- `step` determines the slider increments","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":861,"value":"viewof sizeInput = Inputs.range(d3.extent(penguins, d => d.body_mass_g), \n {label: \"Choose minimum penguin mass (g):\", \n step: 1})","pinned":true,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":854,"value":"Plot.plot({\n marks: [\n Plot.tickY(penguins, \n {x: \"species\", \n y: \"body_mass_g\",\n filter: d => d.body_mass_g > sizeInput, // Filter to only include observations where body mass exceeds the value of the sizeInput slider! \n stroke: \"species\"}\n )\n ]\n})","pinned":true,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":703,"value":"## More resources\n\n- [Plot Cheatsheets](https://observablehq.com/collection/@observablehq/plot-cheatsheets)\n- [Observable Plot](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/plot) by Mike Bostock\n- [Plot Examples](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/plot-exploration-penguins) (with penguins!) by Ian Johnson – includes examples and practice tasks with hints & solutions\n- [Plot Overview for matplotlib users](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/plot-overview-for-matplotlib-users) by Ayodele Odubela\n- [Plot for D3 users](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/plot-for-d3-users) by Toph Tucker\n- [Plot & Vega-Lite](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/plot-vega-lite) by Ian Johnson\n","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":1023,"value":"### Credit\n\nThe interactive hover highlighting in the top table was made possible by @Fil, who created and shared this [Co-highlight notebook](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/co-highlight).","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":1018,"value":"### Appendix","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":413,"value":"import {toc} from \"@mbostock/toc\"","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":1006,"value":"function activate(...sources) {\n const coh = d3.selectAll(sources).selectAll(\".coh\");\n const colors = d3\n .scaleOrdinal(d3.schemePastel2)\n .domain(\n new Set(\n Array.from(coh, (e) => e.className.replace(/\\bcoh\\b/g, \"\").trim())\n )\n );\n\n coh.on(\"pointerenter\", (e) => {\n const m = d3.select(e.currentTarget);\n const c = m\n .attr(\"class\")\n .replace(/\\bcoh\\b/g, \"\")\n .trim();\n coh\n .style(\"background\", null)\n .filter(`.${c}`)\n .style(\"background\", colors(c));\n });\n d3.selectAll(sources).on(\"pointerleave\", () => coh.style(\"background\", null));\n\n // returns the color scale so we can create a legend & more\n return colors;\n}","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":1008,"value":"activate(b)","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":1011,"value":"html``","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"}],"files":"$W4f","stdlib":"1"}} 44:"$43:body"
