It is also a name for a ruler — a tool for measuring the _parafactological landscape_ of the city.In absence of facts we have to deal with the word of mouth which is beyond _factological_, it is filtered by interest, amplified by oddity and refracted through personal fears and beliefs Rumors are inaccurate bits of colloquial data. In absence of fact, they serve as a shared mapping tool. Studying the city through the lens of rumors fits well for less-documented cities, ones with fragmented archives and close familial relationships such as in Yerevan. ## Vishap from who knows where A vishap is an ancient mythological creature — a water dragon rooted in the legends of the Armenian Highlands and materialized as stone sculptures called vishapakars. Վիշապաքար (arm.) — Dragon stone. These vishapakars rose up to five metres high and were usually adorned with reliefs of a fish or the hide of a bull or ram. Nearly all of the stelae stood beside springs or irrigation works, so scientists link the figures carved on them to ancient fertility and water cults. In ancient days, they covered a vast area in the western part of the city. But as history unfolded, their territory gradually shrank. According to recent rumors, a large entertainment complex is now planned for what remains of the gardens. Thanks to the Dalma Gardens, we identified another dimension of rumors — a radius, measurable both in years and in hectares. We compiled a brief timeline of the Dalma Gardens’ history using various online sources and plotted the available data on their size onto a chart: - 685–645 BCE — According to a cuneiform inscription, the gardens were founded during the reign of Rusa II, ruler of Urartu (the Kingdom of Van). At that time they covered a vast area. - 1815 — Hossein Qoli Khan, the last Persian sardar of Erivan, repaired the Dalma canal and integrated it into the broader irrigation system. New orchards were planted. - 19th century — Main phase of the gardens’ development. The territory spanned roughly 790 ha. - 1931 — In Soviet times, a collective farm was established on the grounds. Area: 790 ha. - 1990s — Part of the gardens was transferred to private ownership, residential buildings appeared. - Up to 2004 — A tract of about 600 ha was included in Yerevan’s register of protected historic and cultural sites. Of this, 533 ha were actual gardens. - 2004 — The government decided to sell most of the territory ≈ 530 ha to developers, leaving tenants 256 ha. Later, by government decree, 150 ha of the Dalma Gardens were declared an area of overriding public interest. Active construction began thereafter. - 2020 — The developer was prohibited from building an amusement complex on the Dalma Gardens’ grounds. - 2023–2024 — Yerevan City Hall announced plans to create a new forest-park on ≈ 200 ha of the remaining land. 3a:T491,## 11 The Ruler All of this data has shaped the ruler for measuring the cities based off the rumors. The routine is simple: 1. find your tellers, ask them what extraordinary things they have heard of the city, what parts of the city scare them, what unbelievable fables their friends told them 2. start with **Quoted Rumors**: trace out the dialogue shape, write down what tellers have told, note their name, age, assess their faith and emotion. Mark the size of the rumor, how odd it seems to you and where you recorded it. 3. After collecting an initial round of rumors, mark their distribution in **Rumor Sources** or analyze if you've got all the ages covered. 4. The analysis begins! Mark all the collected rumors by **Depth/Height**, put them on **Time Hill**, lay them out on **Oddity/Faith matrix**. 5. Get a map of the city, mark the **Emotions** on it to see how they cluster. 6. Find a park or a forest and see how its shape changed over time with **Green Zone Radii** 7.
