I was skeptical: my mental model of a smartwatch was mostly a notification buzzer that needs charging more often than a phone. But I strapped it on, and within a few days the neuroscientist in me was genuinely absorbed by the data it was quietly accumulating. An accelerometer on my wrist recording my resting heart rate and estimating VO2 max through gait analysis isn't that different. The hardware is sleeker, and the subject is less amenable to being anaesthetized. At the time I was about three years past my first child, in reasonably good shape, and curious about what the watch would tell me. What I didn't anticipate was that it would witness my second pregnancy almost from the beginning through nine months of gestation, through birth and the postpartum period, and into a training recovery I'm still in the middle of. I also didn't anticipate that I would not sit down to look at all of this data in one place until considerably later than you'd expect from someone whose job involves looking at longitudinal data in one place. My analytical self emerged rather slowly from the postpartum haze. When I finally did dig up all the metrics, aligned on the same time axis, from 2023 through mid-2026, I was quite surprised by how clearly pregnant I was in the data. The watch just kept recording. Let's look at what it captured.` 32:T412,```js html`` ```33:T40b,function smoothSeries(rows, window = 30) { const observed = rows.filter((d) => Number.isFinite(d.value)); const byDay = new Map(observed.map((d) => [dayKey(d.date), d.value])); const start = d3.utcDay.floor(observed[0].date); const end = d3.utcDay.floor(observed.at(-1).date); const days = d3.utcDay.range(start, d3.utcDay.offset(end, 1)); const observedDays = observed.map((d) => d3.utcDay.floor(d.date)); let left = 0; const daily = days.map((date) => { const key = dayKey(date); if (byDay.has(key)) return {date, value: byDay.get(key)}; while (left < observedDays.length - 2 && observedDays[left + 1] < date) left += 1; const d0 = observedDays[left]; const d1 = observedDays[left + 1]; const v0 = observed[left].value; const v1 = observed[left + 1].value; const t = (date - d0) / (d1 - d0); return {date, value: v0 + (v1 - v0) * t}; }); const smoothed = hammingSmooth(daily.map((d) => d.value), window); return daily.map((d, i) => ({date: d.date, value: smoothed[i]})); }34:T79d,function plotMetric(metric, unit, width) { const raw = series[metric]; const smooth = smoothSeries(raw, 30); const xDomain = d3.extent(raw, (d) => d.date); const yDomain = d3.extent(raw.concat(smooth), (d) => d.value); const yPad = (yDomain[1] - yDomain[0]) * 0.08 || 1; const ymin = yDomain[0] - yPad; const ymax = yDomain[1] + yPad; const yLabel = ymax - (ymax - ymin) * 0.05; const eventLabel = ymin + (ymax - ymin) * 0.06; const spans = phaseSpans .map((span) => { const start = d3.max([span.start, xDomain[0]]); const end = d3.min([span.end, xDomain[1]]); return { ...span, start, end, mid: new Date((start.getTime() + end.getTime()) / 2), y1: ymin, y2: ymax, y: yLabel }; }) .filter((span) => span.start < span.end); const events = keyEvents .filter((event) => event.date >= xDomain[0] && event.date <= xDomain[1]) .map((event) => ({...event, y: eventLabel})); return Plot.plot({ width, height: 220, marginTop: 12, marginRight: 16, marginBottom: 44, marginLeft: 58, x: { domain: xDomain, ticks: d3.utcMonth.every(3), tickFormat: d3.utcFormat("%Y-%m"), label: null }, y: { domain: [ymin, ymax], grid: true, label: unit }, marks: [ Plot.rect(spans, {x1: "start", x2: "end", y1: "y1", y2: "y2", fill: "color", fillOpacity: 0.07}), Plot.text(spans, {x: "mid", y: "y", text: "short", fill: "color", fontSize: 9, fontWeight: 700}), Plot.ruleX(events, {x: "date", stroke: "#cfcfcf", strokeDasharray: "2,3"}), Plot.text(events, {x: "date", y: "y", text: "label", fill: "#999", fontSize: 8, rotate: -90, textAnchor: "end"}), Plot.dot(raw, {x: "date", y: "value", r: 1.55, fill: "#378ADD", fillOpacity: 0.14}), Plot.line(smooth, {x: "date", y: "value", stroke: "#184E8E", strokeWidth: 2.5}) ] }); }35:T1050,interactive3d = { function renderSideBySide(width) { const halfW = Math.max(320, Math.floor((width - 24) / 2)); // Shared render function (same as before but takes data + config directly) function makeTraces(rows, zColumn, zLabel, events) { return [ { type: "scatter3d", mode: "lines", name: "Trajectory", showlegend: false, x: rows.map(d => d.VO2Max), y: rows.map(d => d.RestingHR), z: rows.map(d => d[zColumn]), line: {color: "#b8b8b8", width: 3}, opacity: 0.35, hoverinfo: "skip" }, ...phaseOrder.map(phase => { const pr = rows.filter(d => d.phase === phase); return { type: "scatter3d", mode: "markers", name: phase, x: pr.map(d => d.VO2Max), y: pr.map(d => d.RestingHR), z: pr.map(d => d[zColumn]), text: pr.map(d => `${d.dateLabel}
