3e:null 3f:["$","title",null,{"children":"Working with Wikipedia Data | Mubanga Nsofu | Observable"}] 45:T555,md`Let’s break this down a bit. The format=json tells Wikipedia that we want the response [data format](https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Data_formats) to be JSON. JSON is the natural choice for working with data in the browser: we can parse the result using [*response*.json](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Body/json). The browser’s [same-origin policy](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Security/Same-origin_policy) means that, by default, only Wikipedia pages are allowed to talk to the Wikipedia API. Fortunately for us, Wikipedia also supports [cross-origin resource sharing (CORS)](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/CORS): since our query includes origin=*, Wikipedia sets the Access-Control-Allow-Origin header so we can read the response. The action=parse query parameter tells Wikipedia that we want to parse the content of the specified page (page=List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises) and section (section=1), and return the parsed wikitext (prop=text). Sections are numbered, starting with zero; if you forget the section parameter, you’ll get the entire page, which might be slow. You can click to inspect the object above, but here’s the part we care about: the text.`46:[{"id":"50c6037cf21e726c2fd353c5822d40a09738d03ce5b13f53a6f16a71bf37a1b2d158b0d51a161dc8c0d6ddbf3be07a1034be12dc3e2d7fb904624534670f79df","href":"https://static.observableusercontent.com/files/50c6037cf21e726c2fd353c5822d40a09738d03ce5b13f53a6f16a71bf37a1b2d158b0d51a161dc8c0d6ddbf3be07a1034be12dc3e2d7fb904624534670f79df","name":"List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises.json","type":"application/json","lastModified":1670361478194.433,"size":827972}] 43:{"id":"7ad5a9a4979431fa","slug":null,"title":"Working with Wikipedia Data","thumbnail":"216080d62958c0c00edf182ea4d4e10306f7ca713ba5180c47d214e4c7b951b2","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2022-12-06T21:17:58.194Z","update_time":"$D2022-12-06T21:17:58.194Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2022-12-06T21:17:58.194Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":{"id":"bd79ca0f6c38a43e","slug":"working-with-wikipedia-data","title":"Working with Wikipedia Data","owner":{"id":"8c2e47252fd4995c","login":"mbostock","name":"Mike Bostock"}},"stars":0,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"f466891b319ebe82","login":"mubangansofujr","name":"Mubanga Nsofu","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/4b005c4c9d6b341d61dc750c7789ff06fd47dd3bc7d44c0243fea63e28208c53","tier":"starter_2024","bio":"","following":false},"version":733,"publish_version":null,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"40936f732a34be3d","login":"mubangansofujr","name":"Mubanga Nsofu","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/4b005c4c9d6b341d61dc750c7789ff06fd47dd3bc7d44c0243fea63e28208c53","tier":null,"bio":"","following":false}],"members":[{"type":"individual","id":"40936f732a34be3d","login":"mubangansofujr","name":"Mubanga Nsofu","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/4b005c4c9d6b341d61dc750c7789ff06fd47dd3bc7d44c0243fea63e28208c53","tier":null,"role":"editor"}],"comments":[],"custom_thumbnail":false,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":0,"collection":null,"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"Working with Wikipedia Data","cells":[{"id":0,"value":"md`# Working with Wikipedia Data\n\nWikipedia has a fantastic array of tables on various subjects. The revenue estimate is quantitative (vl.fieldQ) while the franchise name is nominal (vl.fieldN).\n\nBy default, Vega-Lite doesn’t preserve the input order of the data; instead, it would sort of nominal dimension alphabetically. We want to see the highest-grossing franchises at the top, preserving the original order on Wikipedia, so we disable sorting on the *y*-dimension.
