Food Affordability and Undernutrition

Approximately 2.4 billion people were moderately or severely food insecure in 2022. With around 735 million people suffering from undernutrition in 2023. Undernutrition and food insecurity are serious issues in the world today, but where it impacts people the most varies.

By 2050 the risk of hunger and malnutrition could rise by 20%. It's estimated that approximately 9 million people die each year due to hunger and 3.1 million children each year.

Energy Sufficient Diets could reduce the number of deaths caused by undernutrition in 2021 approximately 1.1 billion people could not afford them. They typically consist of starchy staple foods. Energy Sufficient Diets can prevent wasting which is caused when an individual is too thin for their height. Today approximately 49 million children under 5 are wasted.

Nutrient Sufficient Diets have an adequate amount of essential vitamins and the minimal amount of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. They help prevent stunting. Stunting can cause various issues in life one which is most notable is its impacts on cognitive functions into adulthood. Today approximately 149 million children under 5 are stunted.

Healthy Diets are diets that meet dietary guidelines and prevent diet-related diseases. They are the cheapest possible meals factoring food groups and may not include cultural or dietary restrictions but do include food groups.
