Well, I tried to optimize the LBG-implementation, and we're using a WebWorker to speed up the rendering (and avoid freezing the browser tab). Also, instead of separating colors into RGB layers, each dot is individually colored using the HSL color space. It also has the ability to emphasize edges when distributing the dots, and instead of a simple Sobel operator we use a Kotsarenko-Ramos comparison. This is a fairly quick approximation for determining perceptual color contrast as well as lightness when doing edge-detection.
