The Research Gap

While individual studies have yielded valuable insights into the effectiveness of specific lifestyle interventions, there remains a notable gap in comprehensive and systematic research that directly compares the relative benefits of these interventions. Direct comparisons based on meta-analyses of individual approaches are challenging because such meta-analyses often use different inclusion criteria and analytical methods. Adopting a consistent approach is crucial to gain a deeper understanding of the effects of behavioral interventions to support healthy cognitive aging.

Study Objectives

Methods

Search Strategy

As the first step in building a meta-analysis database, online searches were conducted using Google Scholar to identify previous meta-analysis papers on lifestyle interventions. The primary contribution of this study is the identification of the demographic and methodological confounders that drive perceived differences between intervention types.

• Equivalence After Adjustment: While raw subgroup analysis might suggest certain pillars are superior, our adjusted head-to-head model (p = 0.5479) proves that CT and PE are equally potent when education and assessment density are held constant. Expansive neuropsychological batteries, while thorough, appear to introduce "statistical noise" or participant fatigue that dilutes the reported efficacy of interventions. Future trials should prioritize parsimonious, construct-valid assessment batteries to better capture true treatment effects.

Conclusion

The "best" lifestyle intervention is not a single pillar, but rather the one most tailored to an individual’s cognitive reserve. By accounting for the powerful moderating effects of education and study design, we move toward a precision medicine approach for cognitive aging—one where the prescription paradox is replaced by a data-driven understanding of how to protect the aging brain.
