### Insight 1: Significant Temporal Fluctuation in Renewable Generation

Carbon intensity can fluctuate significantly throughout the day, implying that aligning energy consumption with periods of low carbon intensity can reduce overall emissions. The visualization shows that in California, carbon intensity drops to ~165g/kWh during midday when solar generation peaks. Conversely, it rises in the evening to ~360g/kWh when solar diminishes, and gas has to fill the gap. This pattern highlights an opportunity for consumers and industries alike to shift energy-intensive activities to times when renewable energy is abundant, such as noon, and avoid unnecessary electricity consumption at night to minimize overall carbon emissions.

### Insight 2: Renewable energy % doesn't always lead to low carbon intensity

In spite of getting over half its energy from renewable sources, Germany has higher carbon intensity than other European countries. 60% of Germany's energy was renewable compared to 44% for the Netherlands in 2023. However, Germany had noticeably higher carbon intensity at 394g/kWh than the Netherlands' 306g/kWh. This is almost 29% higher than the Netherlands. This may be caused by the fact that wind and coal are the largest sources of energy in Germany whereas solar and natural gas are more prevalent in the Netherlands. Coal is 63% more carbon intensive than natural gas according to the visualization. So, when solar generation dwindles after dusk and before dawn coal powerplants have to pick up the slack which greatly raises carbon emissions.

### Insight 3: Imports/Exports can help to keep carbon intensity low

Countries with connected power grids such as Spain and France can keep their respective carbon intensities low by importing low-carbon energy from their neighbors during periods where their own low-carbon production may be low due to various reasons. The visualization's consumption map indicates that when Spain experiences low solar generation, it can import nuclear-generated electricity from France instead of having to tap into own its gas-fired capacity. The visualization shows that this import from France has a carbon intensity of 22g/kWh which is drastically lower than that of gas at 520g/kWh. This cross-border exchange helps Spain meet its energy needs while keeping carbon emissions in check.

**Task 1:** Identify Optimal Times for Energy Consumption Based on Carbon Intensity Fluctuations - Expressiveness: - Time Series Data: The visualization provides detailed temporal data on carbon intensity and electricity generation by source. - Effectiveness: - Identifying Patterns: Users can effectively observe daily patterns in carbon intensity.
**Subtask 1.1:** Correlate Renewable Generation Peaks with Carbon Intensity Dips - Expressiveness: - Data Availability: Both renewable generation and carbon intensity data are available over time. - Effectiveness: - Visual Correlation: Users can visually correlate peaks and dips by viewing graphs side by side but they cannot overlay them on top of each other. - Cognitive Load: The lack of direct overlays increases cognitive effort.
**Task 2:** Compare Carbon Intensity with Renewable Energy Generation in Specific Regions - Expressiveness: - Color Encoding: The visualization employs a sequential color scale to represent carbon intensity, with shades ranging from green (low carbon intensity) to dark brown (high carbon intensity). This effectively communicates quantitative variations in carbon intensity across regions. - Energy Mix Representation: Over each region, the visualization displays bar charts showing the proportion of electricity generation from different sources (e.g., coal, natural gas, wind, solar). Each energy source is represented by a distinct color. - Data Attributes Represented: The necessary attributes—carbon intensity and electricity generation by source—are clearly expressed, allowing users to access all relevant information for this task. - Effectiveness: - Color Perception: The use of color hue to represent carbon intensity is effective, as humans are adept at distinguishing colors along a sequential scale. They even included a color-blind mode to increase accessibility. - Interactive Elements: The visualization allows users to hover over regions to see detailed numeric values, enhancing data accessibility.
**Subtask 2.1:** Compare Carbon Intensity with Renewable Energy Generation in Specific Regions - Expressiveness: - Time Series Graphs: Upon selecting a region, the visualization provides time series graphs displaying changes in carbon intensity and electricity generation by source over time. - Data Attributes Represented: Temporal variations in carbon intensity and renewable vs. fossil fuel generation are clearly presented. - Effectiveness: - Line Graphs: The use of line graphs with time on the x-axis and quantitative values on the y-axis is effective for illustrating trends and fluctuations. - Color Coding: Different energy sources are distinguished by color, aiding in visual separation. - Synchronization: However, the graphs for carbon intensity and energy generation are presented separately, which may require users to mentally correlate the data.
**Task 3:** Evaluate the Impact of Electricity Imports on Regional Carbon Intensity - Expressiveness: - Flow Arrows: The visualization depicts electricity imports and exports using flow arrows between regions, with color hue representing the magnitude and arrows indicating direction. - Data Attributes Represented: The 'from' and 'to' countries and carbon intensity are represented, but precise quantitative values for flows may not be immediately apparent without hovering over an arrow. - Effectiveness: - Visual Clarity: Flow arrows can become cluttered in regions with numerous interconnections in a small area, potentially obscuring smaller flows. - Interactivity: Hovering over flow lines may provide exact values, but this requires additional user effort.
**Subtask 3.1:** Compare Carbon Intensity During High and Low Import Periods - Expressiveness: - Temporal Data: Time series graphs for electricity imports/exports and carbon intensity are available, though they may be in separate views. - Effectiveness: - Data Correlation: Users need to switch between graphs to compare imports/exports and carbon intensity over time, which can be cognitively demanding. - Visual Overlays: Lack of direct overlays or combined graphs may hinder the ability to see correlations.
### Areas for improvement - Overlay Time Series Data: - Overlay Graphs: Allow users to overlay carbon intensity and other variables (e.g., renewable generation, imports) on the same time series graph. - Synchronized Cursors: Implement cursors that move across multiple graphs simultaneously to align data points temporally. - Benefit: Facilitates easier correlation and analysis of how variables interact over time. - Provide Analytical Tools: - Statistical Indicators: Include options to display correlation coefficients or other statistical measures between variables. - Benefit: Empowers users to conduct deeper analyses and derive more nuanced insights. - Improve Data Clarity: - Simplify Visual Clutter: In regions with dense data, provide options to filter or adjust the level of detail displayed. - Tooltips and Contextual Information: Enhance tooltips with contextual explanations to aid interpretation. - Benefit: Enhances user experience by reducing information overload, and increasing both discriminability and ease of understanding.
